As a Lead Portfolio Manager, you will lead on the Network Portfolio Operations across the Network Architecture & Engineering ecosystem that enable our highly distributed global business for site, fleet, asset and IoT connectivity, required to deliver against our integrator business strategy. A globally focused shipping and transportation organisation is continuing to drive an ambitious and complex change and transformational programme to deliver a service of excellence for its customers and clients worldwide. The Global CTIO has a mandate from the Maersk board to lead the Technology transformation of Maersk which will enable the Maersk business strategy to become the global integrator of container logistics through digitising the Maersk business processes and customer engagement.

The Technology function is fundamental to enable the company’s transformation and in response to this demand, our in-house technological capability is growing exponentially. The Network Strategy & Portfolio Operations function is essential to our transformation, it is a central team within Network Architecture & Engineering, responsible for strategy & transformation, portfolio development, service delivery and the business operations of the network, perimeter and underpinning systems and tools capabilities provided to the Maersk business.

Reporting to the Head of Network Strategy & Portfolio Operations you will serve as a Lead Portfolio Manager. The role is responsible for in-life business operations and initiatives, co-creation and delivery of business cases, collation and maintenance of key artefacts, business intelligence reporting and insights, to enable portfolio roadmaps, engineering, delivery and run of capabilities provided centrally and locally to the Maersk business.

It has a critical role to play as we continue to develop our long-term multi-technology and multi-product network and perimeter capabilities, connecting our asset, sites and people on land and at sea. Aligning strategy to execution of our portfolio operations that not only meet the need of our business today but will be a differentiator, enabling our colleagues and partners with technology solutions that are a catalyst for productivity and innovation.

Scope -


All data networks provided to Maersk across Core, Edge and Cloud locations (offices, warehouses, terminals, vessels, data centres, cloud etc), and the perimeter services that protect and enable them including but not limited to:

  • Wireless Transport: Satellite | 4G/LTE | 5G
  • IoT Networking Solutions: Industrial Wi-Fi
  • WAN: Internet | IP/MPLS | Next-Gen/SD WAN
  • LAN: DC Networking | SDN | Fixed & Wireless
  • Perimeter: Load balancers | NG Firewalls | Security Service Edge

Specific Job Requirements -


The role holder will manage the budgeting process and support the Network Architecture & Engineering function’s budget requests to relevant stakeholders by determining the costs (people, process and technology) for operating and growing the network, perimeter, systems and tooling ecosystem, updating the portfolio roadmap and aligning value streams to emerging priorities.

Working across Network Architecture and Engineering in eliciting and understanding portfolio operations needs, expectation and constraints (including quality, schedule and costs) and translating them into actionable functional specifications to be delivered through the network portfolio operating model.

Connect our portfolio business operations to ours strategy by executing our operational themes, supporting future portfolio planning and help to establish a clear portfolio operating model whilst ensuring all value streams and shared services are aligned with clear objectives and KPIs.

Manage the development of BI analytics and reports which support portfolio strategy development and operational analytics.

Manage internal communication, collaboration and interdependency tracking across related internal functions and steering groups to ensure successful operations execution.

To be a successful business-technologist at Maersk, you must be passionate about building, enabling and sustaining our business, as well as inspiring and developing our people. Further, in this role you will:

  • Be an expert in developing strategies, objectives, and goals for improving operational performance, conduct investigations into business problems and operations execution to enable the Right First Time (RFT) development, plan and build of the Network and Perimeter ecosystem that realises competitive advantage for Maersk.
  • Consider business requirements against the current processes and leading in the development and or implementation of requirements utilising analysis techniques.
  • Create appropriate data models to support the defined reporting requirements. Create and maintain documentation for all delivered technical specifications & reporting and analysis.
  • Consistently apply Agile governance and facilitating portfolio management events, manage operational transparency, metrics and risk by supporting the creation and review of key metrics and reporting key milestones and objectives and the health of portfolio deliveries while engaging stakeholders in risk identification and mitigation and dependency management
  • Act as a Portfolio Operations SPOC and responsible towards TSE Product and Tech Finance ensuring that portfolio operations for Network Architecture and Engineering are harmonized and outcomes are in line with central initiatives.
  • Managing all business operations streams, including external parties and vendors. Driving and challenging Engineering and Delivery teams on their assumptions of successful execution.
  • Drive a climate of partnering and develop deep relationships within TSE, TOP and user groups across the Maersk business who rely on Technology services provided by this function.

What I'll be doing – your accountabilities?


Network Portfolio Operations – Operations management of resourcing, portfolio roadmaps, investment cases, horizontal budgets, Objectives and key results (OKR), business intelligence, reporting and compliance to company and statutory policies to underpin the development, delivery and in-life run of all Network and Perimeter products and services across Core, Edge and Cloud:

  • Identify portfolio investment priorities (people, process and technology) developing business cases to align with overall strategy and transformation plans
  • Governance to ensure cycle time, cost and quality of portfolio investment, product development and service delivery; improvement of in-life operational performance; reduction of cost of failure
  • Overseeing of portfolio cost and transformation: product cost base metrics and prioritised programmes to deliver an industry leading cost base; financial governance for solutions
  • Development and setting of goals/OKR/key metrics in concert with TSE Product Strategy & Org Operations and Tech Finance and track their outcomes
  • Horizontal CAPEX andf OPEX forcasting, tracking and demand prioritisation, with a focus on optimising capex investment, and operating costs
  • Contribute to prioritizing and delivering a back log of initiatives tied to portfolio developments to ensure maximum value is delivered in shorter, consistent time frames (ie. Sprints).
  • Collaborate with other teams on shared goals or dependencies and maintain effective communication with relevant partners
  • Continuous improvement and transformation of product portfolio management and development process
  • Single view of priority initiatives to improve delivery experience across portfolio
  • Identify, assess and manage risks to the success of portfolio deliverables

The Candidate -


To be considered for this opportunity candidates will have the following capabilities.

  • A demonstrable track record operating as a Senior Network Portfolio Development or Technology Portfolio Lead within a globally focused business
  • Significant expertise in business management and transformation strategy execution in a large Multi-national Corporation, Network Service Provider or Systems Integrator
  • The candidate substantial experience of operations management, developing technology investment cases and managing significant technology budgets
  • Significant network technology experience to engage on network topics internally and externally with global technical and non-technical teams
  • Ability to handle ambiguity, complex requirements, consolidation and analysis of data to draw appropriate conclusions with the skills to understand the bigger picture and drive out key business benefits and business cases where required
  • Significant experience leading complex, cross-functional projects with multiple partners; experience with a scaling business is a plus
  • Highly financially literate able to realise cost synergies, with strong MS Excel, PowerBI & data analysis skills
  • Needs to be highly analytical and comfortable operating across the business
  • Strong supplier and vendor management driving collaboration and innovation
  • Good understanding of the various agile frameworks like Scrum, Kanban, SAFe
