The Elemans lab at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a three-year position at the assistant professor level to study motor control and biomechanics of sound production in songbirds. Application deadline: 13 August 2020.
Our research
The Elemans lab uses a combination of experimental and computational approaches to study motor control and physical mechanisms of sound production in the vocal vertebrates. We use and develop methods from biomechanics, electrophysiology, acoustics, and behaviour at different levels of organization (cellular, whole organ, in vivo).
Within the Department of Biology, the Elemans lab is embedded in the Sound Communication and Behaviour group which studies vocal communication at the interface of behavioural neuroscience, biomechanics, robotics and physiology, in a large range of animals from insects to whales.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Establish and lead their own research area
• Conduct externally funded research of the highest international standard
• Publish research outcomes through international peer-reviewed publications
• Contribute to teaching Organismal Animal Physiology and Behavioural Neuroscience
• Supervise bachelor, master and PhD students
• Complete postgraduate teacher training for assistant professors at SDU.
The successful candidate will be supported with:
• Access to a well-developed research infrastructure
• Laboratory space, shared equipment, and access to modern core facilities, such as imaging and computational facilities
• A research climate of lively, open and critical academic discussion within and across different fields of research
• Network activities among young scientists.
Expected qualifications
The following professional and personal qualifications are required:
• PhD degree or equivalent qualifications
• Strong publication record in biomechanics, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field
• Excellent track record in obtaining external funding
• Experience in under- and postgraduate teaching and supervision
• Excellent pedagogical skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Excellent written and oral English language communication skills.
Preferred qualifications
• Experience with muscle physiology, acoustic communication, or micro-surgical experimental procedures
• Other experiences, such as signal analysis, and/or programming (R, Matlab, or equivalent) present a distinct advantage
• Experience with managing and maintaining animal breeding colonies
• Experience with animal experiments
• Teaching experience in Organismal Animal Physiology and Behavioural Neuroscience.
