Assistant Professor in Economic History

The Department of Economics, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, invites applications for a vacant position as Assistant Professor for a period of three years within the area of Economic History. The application deadline is 15 July 2022; the starting date is flexible, but we hope to welcome our new colleague 1 September 2022.

About the department

The Department of Economics is an international department with a strong tradition for excellence in research and teaching within the various areas of economics. Its research, teaching, and dissemination activities are organized within four platforms: Econometrics and Data Science, Economic History, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics. It is the aim of the department to conduct and disseminate research of the highest international standard, documented through publications in internationally distinguished journals, presentations at international conferences, dissemination with high visibility and broad societal impact, and securing external funding. Furthermore, the department emphasizes high-quality research-based teaching using the most relevant teaching methods to enhance students’ learning.

The department is responsible for the undergraduate as well as the graduate programmes in Economics and Mathematics-Economics at campus Odense. It is also responsible for economics courses at different campuses at the University of Southern Denmark with activities in Odense, Sønderborg, and Slagelse. The research activities (and the workplace) are situated in Odense.

About the position

The candidate will become a member of the Historical Economics and Development Group (HEDG) which focuses on teaching and research in economic history with a strong quantitative focus. Our researchers aim to answer important questions concerning health, migration, demography, and development in general. HEDG is internationally acknowledged as a leading research group and attracts substantial grants and media coverage, as well as publishing books and articles with top outlets. While it is not a requirement for applying, we are looking to expand our expertise beyond North America and Western Europe, and applicants conducting research on regions outside of these areas are particularly welcome.

We expect our new colleague to

  • undertake high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels,
  • supervise undergraduate and graduate students,
  • conduct high-quality research that leads to publications in highly reputed international academic journals,
  • take responsibility for program and curriculum development,
  • strengthen the department’s development in research, teaching, and dissemination,
  • maintain and develop relationships with appropriate stakeholders,
  • perform academic, knowledge dissemination/outreach and administrative tasks.

The primary language at SDU, both in bachelor teaching and in administrative processes, is Danish. The teaching and research language at the department is English and Danish.

It is important for the department that all colleagues have good interpersonal skills and are dedicated to and engaged in the daily academic and social interaction of the research platforms and the department.

The successful applicant is expected to have

  • scientific qualifications documented through a PhD degree in a PhD in economics or a related field
  • research interest and competences in Economic History

A successful applicant is expected to be able to demonstrate a positive contribution to the general development of the department. Relevant other professional experiences and qualifications in addition to the ones listed above may be considered. Appointment to the position requires a PhD or equivalent and will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

  • Information on teaching experience or other forms of knowledge communication
  • Complete list of publications, indicating which publications are most relevant for the position
  • Up to 5 of the most relevant publications. Please upload a pdf for each publication, if the publication has been co-authored, co-author statements must be a part of this pdf
    • Please attach the PhD dissertation as a publication if such exist


All non-Danish documents must be translated into English.

Assessment of applications will be done under existing Appointment Order for universities. Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her.

Applications that are incomplete with regards to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee. Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.
