The Department of Economics (ECON) and Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics (SEBE) at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a four-year position as assistant professor. The starting date is flexible, but we hope to welcome our new colleague on 1 September 2023.

Job description JEL Codes: D60/62, G11, H40, Q20, Q54/55/57 ECON is an international department with a strong tradition for excellence in research and teaching within the various areas of economics. The research, teaching, and dissemination activities at the department are organized within four groups: Econometrics and Data Science, Economic History, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics. A more elaborated description of the department and the groups can be found on the department website. In addition to an international faculty focused on excellence in research and teaching in social sciences, SEBE has a strong commitment to interdisciplinary methods and approaches both within social sciences and across faculties. Activities are organized within three groups: the Management and Economics of Resources and the Environment (MERE) group, Markets and Organizational Behavior, and Sociology; and three interdisciplinary centers: The European Center for Risk and Resilience Studies, the Center for Rural Research, and the Danish Centre for Risk and Safety Management (joint with Aalborg University). It is the aim of both the departments to conduct research of the highest international standard documented through 1) publications in internationally distinguished journals, 2) presentations at international conferences, 3) external funding from competitive programs and 4) dissemination with high visibility and broad societal impact. The departments emphasize high-quality research-based teaching using the most relevant teaching methods to enhance students' learning. The departments are responsible for undergraduate as well as graduate education in several programmes, e.g., Economics and Mathematics-Economics at campus Odense, and Environmental and Resource management in Esbjerg. The departments are also responsible for economics and interdisciplinary courses, e.g. economics for biologists, at different campuses at the University of Southern Denmark with activities in Odense, Slagelse, Esbjerg, and Sønderborg. The workplace will be equally split between Odense and Esbjerg. It is important for the departments and the centre’s mandate to engage with diverse stakeholders that applicants have good interpersonal skills and are dedicated to take part in the daily academic and social interaction of the research groups and at the departments.

The assistant professor will be affiliated to the group of Microeconomists at ECON (link) and the MERE Research Group at SEBE (link). The groups focus on research in micro- and renewable resource economics from a theoretical and applied context. Research project on Aquatic Nature-based Solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation The candidate joins an international team of researchers and will be involved in a prestigious research project under the Elite Centre of Aquatic Nature-based Solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation (Aqua-NbS). The aim of the centre is to scale up and integrate approaches of Aquatic Nature-based Solutions to expand the provision of multiple ecosystem services, including carbon storage, climate regulation, water filtration, coastal protection, and food-web support. The work includes cross-disciplinary approaches that span the full land-sea continuum and incorporate a comprehensive range of technological, institutional, and socio-economic settings. Aqua-NbS will investigate aquatic habitats and their valuable ecosystem services to craft inclusive, detailed guidelines on cost-effective opportunities and addressing the challenges in upscaling aquatic NbS. Experience with bio-economic, climate and/or ecosystem services modelling, public goods provisioning and assessment, game theory, institutional economics and economic applications in aquatic renewable resources, conservation, and/or related infrastructure development are especially welcome profiles. Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

The assessment committee evaluates the applications based on the appointment guidelines of the department.
When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. Applications that are incomplete regarding the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee. Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.
