Sønderborg

SDU Mechatronics and the Centre of Industrial Mechanics, part of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg, invites applications a position as PhD student in mechanical engineering. Starting date is negotiable, preferably 1st quarter of 2023.

Unique opportunity

The Centre for Industrial Mechanics is a newly established centre focusing on mechanics in combination with mechatronics. You have the unique opportunity to be a part of the new centre and influence the development of the centre. We are in the process of building up a mechanical engineering degree and labs to support the educational activities and the research.

Workplace description

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical engineering covers research and education spanning from fundamentals to applications of engineering science. All our courses are taught in English reflecting the fact that more than half our students and staff are internationals. The Centre for Industrial Mechanics is located at SDU's beautiful campus in Sønderborg, in the inspiring building of Alsion, which is a centre for science, culture and learning in the heart of Sønderborg and perched on the strait of water separating the island of Als from the mainland. The university has very close relations to the industry in Sønderborg, Southern Denmark and Northern Germany. A significant fraction of the projects in the centre are conducted in close cooperation with the industry, which count world leading companies in growing fields such as e-mobility, automation, climate solutions and energy efficiency.

At the Centre for Industrial Mechanics, research, education and innovation are performed in teams of scientists and support staff with competences spanning a wide range of fields including applied cyber-physical systems, mechanical structure integrity and life assessment, heating and cooling, renewable energy systems, artificial intelligence, and modelling and mechatronic prototyping.

The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate his/her ambition to conduct high-quality research, present the results at international conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. We expect the candidate to take part in select teaching activities.

Project Description

In 2030, the EU's need for hydrogen will reach 10 million tons, with 17.3 percent of that coming from renewable sources in order to meet the energy transition's goals. The fact that hydrogen is not naturally accessible in significant numbers on Earth poses a difficulty to a wider deployment of hydrogen-based energy systems. Instead, it must be generated from other substances, such as hydrocarbons or water, through an energy-intensive process. Besides the conventional techniques such as steam methane reforming (SMR), oil refineries, and coal gasification, water electrolysis is an alternative ecologically beneficial hydrogen generation process that allows for the use of renewable power to produce hydrogen in a carbon-free way.

The goal of this project's research is to a) create scalable models that can be applied to the study of large electrolyzer system operation under conditions of variable energy availability and hydrogen demand, and b) use these models to identify operational strategies that enable optimal operation at all times, even under changing operational conditions.

Job Description

  • Development and programming of control-oriented models for optimal operation of large-scale electrolyzer systems
  • Analysis of optimal operation of electrolyzer systems under dynamically varying conditions
  • Development of suitable operation strategies that enable safe and economical operation

The candidate should have two or more of the following capabilities:

  • knowledge about power-to-X (green hydrogen: PEM electrolyser, Alkaline Electrolyser, Solid Oxide Electrolyser).
  • Knowledge about renewable energy systems, process engineering, sector coupling, district heating network.
  • Knowledge about energy system modelling.
  • Experience on artificial intelligence/machine learning/optimization.
  • Experience on software development.

The candidate must have:

  • MSc degree in a relevant discipline (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or any other relevant Engineering disciplines),
  • Fulfill the requirements of the PhD school at the faculty of engineering

For further information, please visit www.SDU.dk/dme and https://www.SDU.dk/en/forskning/cim and contact Associate Professor Lars Duggen, Head of Centre for Industrial Mechanics, tel. +45 6550 1640, e-mail: [email protected] or Associate Professor Ali Khosravi, tel. +45 6550 1887, e-mail: [email protected].

Conditions of employment

Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrolment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).

Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrolment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
