An opportunity to be an expert in ML technologies and counterpart across tech disciplines
As our Principal ML Engineer, you will act as an expert in advising and helping to improve existing ML technologies in the Wine Team. To do so, you will be responsible for seeking out not only clear and obvious but also unclear and unobvious ML opportunities in the Wine Team. As a part of this, you will be the ML counterpart in a team of many disciplines such as backend developers, frontend developers, platform engineers, and UX experts. Accordingly, a key task of yours will be to understand business problems and leverage them through the use of new and existing algorithms / ML frameworks.
Your key responsibilities across these areas of focus will include to:
- Work with product owners to understand requirements and deliver high-quality solutions to our users
- Scanning is our first priority this year: we have 2 main objectives in this sense, enhancing the accuracy of scan matching and making the whole experience of scanning more effective and intuitive. We plan to revamp the technology we use for scanning, also with the help of ML custom models.
- Wine data accuracy: the second big project in focus this year is revisiting our data verification framework, to enhance accuracy and scalability. We intend to make better use of the data we collect (e.g. from merchants’ feeds and from users) and potentially automate the validation of such signals to minimize inconsistencies and mitigate the lack of data.
- The ML Team has two dedicated resources for developing and maintaining an ML Ops pipeline. You are expected to pitch in your ideas, experiences, and opinions.
- The ML Team consists of ML Engineers located in other cross-functional teams. You are expected to be a sparring partner on their projects.

Consequently, enjoy giving presentations and consider yourself good at bringing people to your point of view.
Furthermore, you are fairly conscientious, and therefore, prefer being punctual and paying great attention to details. Therefore, you relate to the word perfectionist, as you are thorough in your approach and want things done properly.Additionally, this approach is amplified by your need to organize and establish clear priorities. Working at a fast pace is not unknown to you and you cope well with multi-tasking. Consequently, you typically find others relying on you, as you are keen on honoring the commitments you have agreed to, thus value ethical matters.

- Ph.D. or a MSc. degree in math, physics, computer science, or related field
- 5+ years of relevant experience as ML Engineer or similar
- Hands-on experience designing and implementing end-to-end solutions using Machine and Deep Learning models and workflow
- You are an expert within at least one ML field (Computer Vision, NLP, Deep Learning, etc.) and have a basic understanding of other fields
- An experienced applied ML Engineer who works in the tension between engineering and science
- Experience with cutting edge ML tools & languages (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, HuggingFace transformers, Scikit-Learn, etc.)
- Experience building new products that use state-of-the-art algorithms
- Knowledge of unit / functional / integration testing, profiling, and code tuning
- You are fluent in Python
- Able to read, write, and speak English fluently
- You are a curious, communicative person who is eager to learn and is ready to join a company with few formal procedures and limits
- Scientific and critical thinking, but also possess the ability to present your ideas clearly
