Læger uden Grænser/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Denmark is looking for a 1-year replacement for our “Association Coordinator and Climate Advocacy Officer”.

We are looking for a colleague with passion for humanitarian medical agendas as well as experience in facilitating and empowering a member-based humanitarian organization and its association members.

We are in particular looking for someone who is passionate about “greening” humanitarian work and who can embrace moving this agenda forward both internally within MSF’s association as well as externally in our advocacy network.

The Association Coordinator and Climate Advocacy Officer will be part of the Advocacy and Analysis Unit (AAU) and work closely with colleagues in other teams of MSF Denmark, MSF Denmark’s Association and Board, as well as MSF’s International Association Network.

Core responsibilities and tasks


The “Association coordinator and climate advocacy officer” has two main roles, split 50-50%.

As Association coordinator, you will be working towards building a vibrant, active and empowered association for the members of MSF in Denmark as well as supporting the association and its elected representatives, the Board of MSF Denmark.

As climate advocacy officer, you will be the focal person on climate change and planetary health and contribute to MSF Denmark’s advocacy priorities. The overall aim is to create lasting improvements for MSF patients in the most vulnerable situations globally.

In both roles, you will work closely with the AAU team, other MSF Denmark teams, the association members, and the international MSF Movement.

Your main tasks will include:

As Association Coordinator (50 %)

Supporting and servicing the board and association of MSF Denmark

  • Support and facilitate the work of the board on all board and associative related issues. This includes administrative and content support to all board members in their work and their roles in different board positions and working groups, including preparation, execution, and follow-up on monthly board meetings.
  • Lead the annual planning cycle of the MSF Denmark Association, including budget monitoring and reporting on the board and association budgets.
  • Organize and coordinate the General Assembly and facilitate other association events in Denmark to boost the associative life for current and previous international mobile staff, office staff and volunteers.
  • Stay up to date with associative topics, debates, and projects, and be able to synthesize information in a meaningful way to Danish association members, including on the priority of planetary health and greening MSF.
  • Plan, coordinate and carry out regular communication for the association through e-mails, newsletters, Inside OCB (MSF Operational Centre of Brussels intranet), weekly updates of the membership database, and social media on relevant national and international information.
  • Function as the link between the board, the association and the executive MSF Office, and actively promote the association identity of MSF on all relevant platforms.
  • Debrief all international mobile staff and support the HR department with retention of field staff by keeping members active in the association.
  • Work closely with the MSF Denmark volunteer coordinator to ensure a strong link between the volunteers and association members.
  • Regularly working outside “office hours” for associative events, board meetings, etc.

MSF International coordination as Association Coordinator:

  • Function as MSF Denmark’s focal point for the International Association Coordinators – and participate actively as a member of the International Association Network to support joint initiatives and projects for the associations of MSF internationally.
  • Participate actively as a member of the OCB Association Team to coordinate and hold annual global associative events, including Field Associative Debates, Field Representatives Week and the General Assembly of OCB.
  • Represent the MSF Denmark Association annually at international associative events, including the International General Assembly.
  • Provide statistical data on the MSF Denmark Association to support annual reporting by the International Office.

As Climate Advocacy Officer (50 %):

  • Be the primary lead in developing strategies to advance MSF’s advocacy work on planetary health in a Danish context, impacting Danish decision makers to take positive moves politically and financially towards mitigation, adaptation and loss and damages in humanitarian contexts.
  • Produce well-researched talking points, reports, background papers, and analytical briefings on different humanitarian emergencies and thematic advocacy areas, in particular related to planetary health and climate.
  • Stay informed about Danish political debates for potential engagement for MSF Denmark related to climate and planetary health.
  • Stay informed about MSF’s international humanitarian and medical priorities and guidelines on planetary health and integrate these into the Danish advocacy work in alignment with the strategic goals.
  • Coordinate and execute events, panel discussions, and initiatives, where MSF Denmark can build awareness on planetary health, including a public workshop day in October 2023, the launch of the Lancet Countdown 2023 and COP28.
  • Support the green transition and carbon reduction within MSF Denmark, including producing annual carbon accounts and reporting on them internally and externally – and support the cross-office Green Team who works towards the goal of reducing by 50 % the CO2 emissions of MSF Denmark by 2030.

As a team member of AAU

  • Participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating MSF Denmark’s overall advocacy strategies and plans.
  • Contribute actively towards a positive teamwork/spirit and collective problem-solving attitude as an integrated part of the AAU team and MSF Denmark.

Qualifications


  • Degree in environmental studies/sustainability, administration, global health, political science, international relations, human rights, anthropology, or the like.
  • Event planning and project management experience.
  • Strong experience in working with member-based organizations, associations, or volunteers. Preferably experience from the humanitarian sector. Field experience is an added value.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English essential.
  • Knowledge about humanitarian or development issues as well advocacy approaches and tools.

Competences


  • Strong administrative skills, strategic planning skills, communication skills, organization & planning skills.
  • Ability to work independently, with a minimum of supervision, to accomplish the goals of the

position while inviting the participation and incorporating the voices of multiple constituencies.

  • Be able to handle sensitive information according to the organizations GDPR rules.
  • Thorough understanding of humanitarian principles and action.
  • Expect evening and weekend work regularly to support association and board activities.

Terms


  • This is a fixed-term contract of 1 year from 1st of August 2023 (12 months).
  • MSF has a flexible working strategy with the option to work partly from home.
