The job
As a summer intern, you will spend two to three months at Danmarks Nationalbank. You will work closely with researchers and contribute to a single research project. Tasks can for example include the preparation of datasets, numerical computations and the application of econometric tools.
Specific project descriptions and requirements
There are four different research projects you can apply for:
1. Scanner Price Data and Monetary Policy - The goal of this project is to analyse scanner datasets from retailers, aimed at testing a hypothesis on firm pricing behaviour. Ultimately, the project will shed light on the impact of monetary policy shocks on the real economy through their impact on retail pricing. Tasks for the intern include: econometric analysis, panel data estimation and hazard function estimation.
The successful applicant has the ability to contribute on the methodological issues of panel data estimation using microdata and should have good knowledge of STATA.
2. Computer Adoption and the Changing Labour Market - The job of the successful candidate will be to assist with the work on a project called "Computer Adoption and the Changing Labour Market". The main task is to support the effort to implement a numerical procedure that solves the model. This involves solving analytically the optimality conditions and then implementing them numerically using MATLAB. Other tasks will include literature review and other general research assistance.
The successful applicant has some experience with MATLAB (optimisation, functions), basic multivariate calculus and basic experience with scientific writing (LaTeX).
3. Non-banks and Macroprudential Policy - This project focuses on exploring the optimal macroprudential policy when credit provision can leak from the regulated financial sector into the unregulated financial sector. The object would be to build on existing work to assess quantitatively what the optimal level of various macroprudential instruments are, given the existence of leakages into the unregulated financial sector.
The work would be computational, requiring a working knowledge of MATLAB. It would be desirable but not required if the Intern had some knowledge of macro-financial modelling. DST access is not required.
4. Labor Market Power in Sweden and Danmark - We study labour markets and specifically monopsony (labour market power) by using a natural experiment and building on both Danish and Swedish register data. More information will be released to the successful applicant. The intern will under our close guidance help us with the Swedish part of the project.
It is necessary that you have good experience with STATA. It is also useful but not necessary that you have experience with other programming languages and/or experience with large datasets (e.g. DST data).
In the application you must specify to which of the four projects you are applying.
We offer
The interns will be employed as project consultants for a period of 2-3 months. We expect a flexible approach, and the workload will depend on the nature of the project and might require varied hours during the different phases of the project up to what would some weeks be a full-time position. Remuneration will be paid on a monthly basis.
Your profile
For all projects, the general requirements are:
- A strong academic background in economics or finance. Applicants should be in the advanced stages of a master's degree in economics or finance or the early stages of their PhD in economics or finance.
- Advanced knowledge in at least one statistical or numerical programming language (STATA, MATLAB, Python or R).
- High proficiency in both English and Danish.
The ideal candidate has a keen interest in economic research and is willing to grow and acquire new skills. Prior experience with using Statistics Denmark datasets would be a great advantage, but is not a requirement.
