Declaration of interest regarding PhD project:
The Department of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is looking for applicants for a PhD position in the field of audiology. The position is available for three years from March 1st 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Research environment
The PhD student will be affiliated with the Research Unit of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology at SDU, which is divided into three sections: Surgically-related ENT, Medical Audiology, and Technical Audiology. The advertised position is available in the Technical Audiology section.
Project description
Modern hearing aids come with many advanced functions and features. During the fitting process, standard settings are typically chosen, even though hearing aid users differ widely in the benefit they obtain from their devices. While some progress has been made in terms of personalizing hearing aid fittings based on audiological, psychoacoustic, and cognitive factors, considerable inter-individual variability remains unexplained. Subjective factors, which have generally received little attention, could play an important role in this regard. Indeed, recent research has identified self-reported hearing handicap as a promising predictor of hearing aid uptake, use, and satisfaction. However, this is not considered in audiological practice so far.
To address this shortcoming, the proposed PhD project will develop clinically feasible measures for determining self-reported hearing handicap. Furthermore, it will assess the utility and added value of these measures for hearing aid provision and prescription. In this manner, new insights with respect to improving hearing aid rehabilitation are anticipated.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with Larry Humes, PhD, distinguished professor emeritus at Indiana University, USA. Collaborations with colleagues from the audiology group at SDU are also planned.
