Declaration of interest regarding PhD project:
The laboratory of Prof. Daniel Ketelhuth, at the Cardiovascular and Renal Research unit, Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is looking for applicants for a PhD position to work in the field of cardiovascular immunology and metabolism. This candidate should be a person with a master’s degree in immunology, biomedicine/human biology, molecular cell biology, medicine, or other related areas. The position is available for immediate start.
Research environment
The candidate will be the principal person coordinating research activities between three partners, the Department of Molecular Medicine and Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, SDU, and the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University. The thesis will be developed mainly at IMM-SDU, in Odense. IMM focus on innovative molecular and biomedical research that increases our knowledge about differing pathophysiological processes, increasing the understanding of the aetiology of life threating diseases, including cardiovascular disease that is the main focus of investigations in Prof. Ketelhuth’s laboratory.
Project description
This PhD project is an integrated part of the interdisciplinary collaborative project entitled ‘The role of Niemann Pick type C2 protein in vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis’. In this PhD project, the candidate will test the hypothesis that lysosomal-mediated lipid metabolism is a key regulator of excess cholesterol, including the formation of crystals in macrophages, thereby also involved in the regulation of vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis. Hence, part of the candidate’s work will consist on testing new potential therapies in a pre-clinical model of atherosclerosis.
Qualifications
A successful candidate should have a master’s degree in immunology, biomedicine/human biology, molecular cell biology, medicine, or other related areas; knowledge in the field of cardiovascular disease can be considered an advantage. The suitable candidate should preferentially have experience in rodent animal research, tissue collection, and standard histology and molecular techniques. The student should be able to integrate and work together with the rest of the team.
