The Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for a full-time faculty position as professor or associate professor with a specific teaching focus in the field of human anatomy.

The position is vacant from October 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Construction of a new, up-to-date human anatomy unit at SDU’s Campus in Odense, Denmark, will be completed in July 2023. This highly innovative and IT- enhanced space will include a new morgue, new dissection facilities, new museum, and plastination capacity. It will be physically joined to forensics, the new Odense University Hospital (OUH), and the new Department of Molecular Medicine as a fully integrated part of the existing Campus in Odense.

The professor will be responsible for heading this human anatomy unit within the Department of Molecular Medicine and coordinating its activities.

The professor will also be responsible for initiating, supervising, and publishing research and to be the daily leader of a research group focusing on any of the strategic areas of biomedicine at the Department of Molecular Medicine within inflammation, cancer, neurobiology, cardiovascular and/or renal physiology/medicine.

It will be possible to recruit a tenure-track academic to supplement the anatomy teaching and research activities associated with the open position after the position has been filled.

Qualifications

We seek candidates with a PhD and educational background in medicine, human anatomy or a related field e.g. pathology, orthopedics, sports science, biomedicine or biomechanics, or similar.

Areas of responsibility

Teaching commitments

The new professor will be head of the anatomy unit and coordinate and deliver dynamic functional human anatomy education, primarily at the undergraduate level for bachelor students in Medicine and Clinical Biomechanics taught at SDU. Principal teaching duties will include the teaching of anatomy courses, and the development of courses including postgraduate courses. The unit at SDU uses touch screens, group teaching, podcasts and interactive approaches. Additionally, the professor will be expected to mentor postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students at the Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU.

Research profile and tasks

The successful candidate will bring a research portfolio within any biomedicine area that broadly complements the major research lines at the Department of Molecular Medicine within inflammation, cancer, neurobiology, cardiovascular and renal physiology/medicine. Research infrastructure with new labs, several core facilities within imaging, transcriptomics and animal models will be available and are physically close to the anatomy unit. Ability to secure external funding is crucial for the research.

Close collaborations will be expected within the department and with OUH. Establishment of strong international collaborations of benefit to the unit as well as to the department will be expected as well. Participation in assessment work and other faculty duties will be part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will be an important task.

The research units

The Department of Molecular Medicine has approximately 180 employees: Approximately 30 tenured researchers, Phd students and post docs and +30 technical staff. The department consists of three closely collaborating and cohabitating research units: Cancer and Inflammation; Cardiovascular and Renal and Neurobiology. Additionally, the department collaborates with OUH and hosts approximately 130 staff from OUH that perform laboratory-based research.

The researchers at the Department of Molecular Medicine teach at several academic educations: Medicine, Pharmacy, Clinical Biomechanics, Health Technology, Audiologopedia and Biomedicine.

Management
The new professor will refer to the Head of the Department of Molecular Medicine and will be part of the management group together with other heads of research.

Salary and terms of employmentThe successful applicant for the position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
