Department of Clinical Immunology, Aalborg University Hospital
The Department of Clinical Immunology, Aalborg University Hospital and the Faculty of Health Science at Aalborg University is offering a PhD scholarship in stroke diagnostics commencing 01.05. 2021 or by individual agreement.
Description of the department and the scientific environment
Department of Clinical Immunology is the regional department for Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine. The department carries out immunological diagnostics, including inborn immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases as well as blood bank management and production of blood products. Research is an integrated part of the department and we have a dedicated group of MSc’s, medical doctors and bioengineers involved in our research group. The research area covers extracellular vesicles, autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, genetic association studies, and cancer immunotherapy.
The department has about 105 employees, including two associate professors, eight medical doctors and six researchers. The department is equipped with modern instruments for molecular and cellular analysis. The department will be located in the New Aalborg University Hospital from 2023.
The positions and project descriptions
The research is founded in our existing research in protein microarray as a platform for analysis of extracellular vesicles. The PhD. fellow will be in close collaboration with Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Aalborg University and CFIN/Mindlab, Aarhus university. On daily basis, the student will be associated to our research laboratory.
The PhD. project
STIMULATE - Stroke diagnostics implementing novel multiparametric test for acute treatment decisions.
Background
Ultra-early diagnosis of stroke, originating from either blocked or bleeding blood vessels in the brain, will save time and lead to faster treatment, which is of utmost importance in stroke. Unfortunately, current methods cannot distinguish between stroke types and a reliable diagnosis has to await imaging of the brain at the hospital, delaying the start of treatment.
The STIMULATE project will develop a blood based diagnostic test to distinguish between stroke types. When suffering a stroke, specific extracellular vesicles are released from the stroke area into the blood. Based on these vesicles, we aim to identify biomarkers that can help diagnose stroke type already in the ambulance, leading to better outcome for the patients
The project is part of greater, collaborative program study (ENIGMA) supported by the Novo Nordic Foundation Tandem Program (STIMULATE) and the Lundbeck Foundation.

Main objectives of the study
- Establish an assay to analyze extracellular vesicles using microarray technology.
- Antibodies will be isolated in vitro, using the technology termed Phage Display, and modified for in solution fast detection of antigens.
