Aalborg
The candidates will be enrolled as PhD students at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No.1039 of 27 August 2013 on the PhD Programme at the University and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions after the three months’ pre-project phase.
About the position
Aalborg University Hospital has decided to develop its research profile by establishing and funding several Research-CUBES (ForkskningsKUBER) which will strengthen its research profile nationally and internationally. One of the first Research-CUBES is REPAIR.
The aim of REPAIR is to improve the identification and biological understanding of DNA damage repair deficient tumours in selected groups of cancer patients, to optimise diagnostics, prognostics, and treatment decisions. REPAIR is a close collaboration between the Departments of: Molecular Diagnostics, Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Genetics, Pathology, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Oncology, and Haematology and the North Denmark Region’s Business Intelligence and Analysis Unit. Genomic signatures derived by unsupervised clustering methods have recently gained increasing interest (see e.g., Alexandrov et al., “The repertoire of mutational signatures in human cancer”, Nature 578, 94-101, 2020). These signatures can, however, be unstable due to, e.g., non-uniqueness and high variability. Thus, the purpose of this PhD study is to study the stability of the genomic signatures by advanced statistical modelling, integrating them with other diagnostics, such as histopathology and imaging, and thereby facilitating validation by genome editing techniques and implementation in personalized medicine research protocols. The PhD student will collaborate closely with researchers and PhD students from the other participating departments.
Limited teaching and supervision duties within bioinformatics and biostatistics at the Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University, may be expected.

We are dedicated to research projects in experimental and clinical haematology. The unit was established 16 years ago and has focus on molecular research, clinical epidemiology and real-world data studies, as well as data science. The Clinical Data Science Group, Department of Clinical Medicine, Aalborg University and Department of Haematology, Aalborg University Hospital, works primarily with methodological developments and applications of bioinformatics, biostatistics, machine learning, and data management within clinical research. The research unit is highly interdisciplinary, employing biostatisticians as well as bioinformaticians, software developers, and data managers who work in collaboration with molecular biologists and health care personnel throughout the Danish health care sector. Based on real world health data and molecular biomarkers, the focus is currently on establishing scalable, national decision support tools for personalized medicine in cancer treatment and health economics benefit. The research unit also participates in the Danish National Research Foundation’s Center for Molecular Prediction of Inflammatory Bowels Disease (PREDICT), the Danish Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Research Centre for Precision Medicine in blood cancer, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation supported National Health Data Science Sandbox.
