Århus C

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of Alzheimer Disease Research as per 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position in the laboratory of Prof. Thomas Willnow.

The Department of Biomedicine offers a vibrant international research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. It employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. Its infrastructure is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

About the research project
Performing comparative studies in patients and in experimental cell and animal models, the laboratory of Thomas Willnow elucidates the genetic basis of Alzheimer Disease (AD). This work has identified some of the most import risk factors for AD, including factors that control amyloidogenic processing or a neuroprotective brain lipid metabolism. More details about this work can be found here and here.

In the current project, you will use iPSC-based strategies to develop novel cell and organoid models for characterization of cell type-specific interactions in the AD brain. More specifically, you will apply genome editing to introduce genetic risk factors of AD into human iPSC lines. You will use these cell lines to generate 2D and 3D models of the human brain, and elucidate how these risk factors impact the functional interaction of neurons and glia in the healthy and the diseased brain. You will corroborate your findings in vivo using established mouse models of AD.

Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc in Alzheimer Disease Research your position is primarily research-based. You will contribute to the development of the department and the host lab through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of independent research of high international quality, including publication.

You will report to Prof. Thomas Willnow.

Your competences
You have academic qualifications at the PhD level within the areas of neuroscience, preferably in neurodegenerative diseases. Documented expertise in iPSC-based techniques, such as genome editing, differentiation protocols, and/or functional analyses of differentiated cell types or cerebral organoids is required.

As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Shortlisting will be used.

If you have any questions about the position, please contact Thomas Willnow ([email protected])

Your place of work will be the Department of Biomedicine, Høegh-Guldbergs Gade 10, building 116, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.
