The Department of Public Health at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in the field of Environmental epidemiology as per 1 January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term (30 month) 25 hours/week position, and within the research group Environment, Occupation and Health.

Department of Public Health
As Assistant Professor at the Department of Public Health, you will be part of an ambitious and internationally recognised department, where we work together to promote public health through research into areas that can prevent, treat and alleviate disease. We are involved in broad collaboration both internally and externally. We share our knowledge with citizens, decision-makers, business and industry, practitioners and other researchers – in municipalities, in the regions and both nationally and internationally. The department either contributes to or is responsible for teaching in medicine, public health science, sport science, optometry and nursing. At the Department of Public Health, you will have approx. 200 colleagues, including ninety academic staff members and a corresponding number of PhD students. We work closely with one another across different fields of study and prioritise a healthy work environment. The general tone among colleagues is informal. The research unit Environment, Occupation and Health deals with the impact of environmental factors, including occupational exposures, on population’s and individual’s health and disease status. The unit develops methods for assessment of exposures - from biomarkers to Job Exposure Matrices. The unit also develops methods for targeted prevention of diseases related to the environment. Examples of current research areas are occupational and environmental epidemiological studies within the broad areas of airway diseases, allergy, and cancer, as well as assessment of humane health effects of controlled exposures in human exposure chambers. The unit holds the responsibility for teaching and training in environmental and occupational health at the Faculty of Health, Aarhus University as well as pre and post graduate courses in occupational and environmental health, and exposure assessment.

Your job responsibilities
As Assistant Professor of Department of Public Health your primary tasks will be research and research-based teaching. You will teach and supervise students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, and you will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. The position of Assistant Professor is a career development position in which you will receive supervision and pedagogical upgrading.

Your research activities will primarily be within the EU funded EPHOR project: Exposome project for health and occupational research (https://www.ephor-project.eu/).The overall objective in EPHOR is to 1) develop innovative methods for collection, storage, and interpretation of more complete and individual level working life exposome data; 2) better knowledge on how the working life exposome relates to chronic diseases using data from existing cohorts together with data collected in EPHOR and 3) models for assessing the economic and societal impact of working life exposures. Our Department heads WP6, where new data will be collected in existing multinational population based cohorts (ECRHS and CONSTANCES), focusing on occupational exposure and respiratory disease.

Your main tasks will consist of:
  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication
  • Teaching, guidance and examination of Bachelor’s and Master's degree students, as well as co-supervision of PhD students
  • Some degree of contribution towards attracting external research funding
  • Involvement in data collection, as well as data managements, statistical analysis and writing up papers in collaboration with researchers from the 12 study centers in EPHOR
  • Co-supervision of a PhD student working within the EPHOR project on working-life exposome, lung function, and obstructive lung disease among men and women
  • Development of international networks and collaborations

You will refer to Head of Department.

Your competences
You have independent research-related qualifications at a high international level. You are a clear communicator and you have some degree of experience of supervision and teaching at Bachelor’s and Master's degree level. Completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar will be a plus, as will experience with the establishment of PhD courses.

You have practical skills within quantitative epidemiological methods and analysis. Experience with international research collaboration is a plus.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are friendly and helpful and able to contribute to a good work environment. You see the pronounced professional diversity of the department as a strength.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

Terms of employment
  • Appointment as an assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level.
  • Further information on the appointment procedure can be found in the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities.
  • The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
  • The yearly base salary for a fulltime assistant professor with minimum 3 years of working experience after achieved MSc degree is DKK 486,969.17 or DKK 512,713.62 with minimum 4 years of working experience after achieved MSc degree. The base salary includes a position related supplement and pension (17.1 %). Additional supplement(s) for special qualifications can be negotiated. Authorisation supplement(s) will be granted, if relevant for the position. Your local eligible trade union representative at Aarhus University negotiates your salary on your behalf.
  • Researchers recruited from abroad are offered a special researcher tax scheme with a lower tax rate.
