Aarhus School of Architecture announces a three-year assistant professor position focusing on building cultures and building technologies in a climate change perspective, intended to strengthen and further nuance the role of building technologies at the school.
We are looking for applicants with strong architecture skills and relevant research and teaching experience from the areas of building cultures and building technologies in a climate perspective. Applicants must have an insight into current architectural practices and an interest in the interaction between technologies, building technologies and architecture in a building cultural and historical perspective.
At Aarhus School of Architecture, we aim for ambitious research and teaching that can bring together aesthetics and technologies. We have strong digital skills, first-class workshop facilities, and a clear focus on incorporating practice-oriented experiments into both research and teaching. Based on a collaborative culture, we continuously aim to strengthen education and research within the development of sustainable architecture. One way we do this is by incorporating new technologies into our working methods and by strengthening the technical knowledge and skills of our students in relation to the climate agenda. In our efforts to develop further the school’s teaching and research, the connection between sustainable building principles and climate awareness is therefore a central focus; a focus this assistant professorship is connected with.
Aarhus School of Architecture has built up strong research environments in areas such as materials, tectonic methods, screening of cultural environments, climate adaptation and new digital technologies. We see history as an important source of knowledge when it comes to developing sustainable technical solutions for tomorrow’s building sector. We announce the assistant professor position to strengthen and develop our existing teaching and research environments in the field of building technologies in conjunction with the cultural and environmental issues connected with the sustainable development of architecture.
An assistant professorship is a three-year further training position whose principal tasks are research and teaching in a 50:50 ratio. The position may also, to a limited extent, include administrative work, visionary work, and cross-institutional and external cooperation. Aarhus School of Architecture ensures that the assistant professor receives supervision and opportunities for educational skills development.
The position is open from 1 May 2023, or subject to further agreement. Remuneration will be in accordance with the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC-fællesoverenskomsten).
The affiliation of the assistant professorship
The assistant professorship will be affiliated with Research Laboratory 2, Technology, Building Cultures and Habitation but is intended to bridge the school’s three research laboratories by employing building culture as the connecting link between Transformation (Research Laboratory 1) and Emerging Sustainable Architecture (Research Laboratory 3). The research part of the position must help strengthen the research laboratory’s focus on sustainable building cultures, tectonic synthesis, and viable forms of habitation in relation to current architectural practices. More about Research Laboratory 2
The teaching part of the position involves project-based teaching as well as module-based courses that run across the school’s teaching environments.
What we offer
At Aarhus School of Architecture, we give you an opportunity to work in a creative and innovative research and teaching environment. You will be given a share of the responsibility for developing further the school’s research and teaching in the area of building technologies. And you will be working together with your colleagues in many contexts – in both large and small groups.
We have recently moved into Denmark’s first new-built school of architecture, located in the heart of Aarhus; a building with greatly expanded workshop facilities that contribute to strengthening our practice-oriented teaching and our opportunities to experiment with materials and building-technical solutions in our research. View the new facilities
The new building has made the school a more integrated part of the city and the surrounding area; an area that is now a laboratory for creativity and for engaging with society. A laboratory where tomorrow’s architecture is created in collaboration with architecture firms and other stakeholders from the building industry, entrepreneurs, the municipality, the citizens of Aarhus, and partners from all over the world. Being a Scandinavian institution, we have a long-standing tradition of cultivating a local approach to architecture, which is also our starting point for having a strong international focus.
Employees of Aarhus School of Architecture have opportunities to work with people from different age groups and from many different cultures. We work together across the institution, and we all play an important role. For which reason, our voice is heard regardless of our position of employment. We believe we create the best possible framework for an attractive and vibrant workplace through mutual recognition and by focusing on co-operation.
We encourage all interested candidates who have the relevant qualifications to apply for the position. We give preference to applications based on competences in research by design, as this is a focus area the school prioritises.
