Århus C

The Department of Near Surface Land- and Marine Geology (SURFACE) in Aarhus at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), is looking for applicants with a strong background within near surface geophysics, geology, numerical methods, geostatistics and software development for a two-year postdoc position within computational geoscience. The preferred starting date is September 1st. The department is experiencing a significant increase in activities utilizing computational geoscience. This includes both actively conducting research in developing new numerical methodologies, and the utilization of existing methodologies in new contexts. We are therefore looking for a new colleague who can contribute with state-of-the-art knowledge and know-how within numerical methods in combination with geoscience, in supporting and further development of this area within the department.

Job description

You will be an integrated part of a scientific working environment where your skills within geophysics, geology and quantitative geology are a key qualification. You will participate in various works on quantitative and statistical descriptions of the subsurface. Because the department covers many geoscientific disciplines, your skills will be applied to various types of subsurface data, including near-surface geophysical data, borehole data, satellite imagery etc., and geological contexts.

For the position, emphasis is placed on probabilistic data integration of the datasets to create subsurface models that includes uncertainty calculations. An important task within this work is to statistically describe and quantify geological variation in subsurface to be used as prior information in probabilistic inversion methods. Thus, in the position you will collaborate with the existing team of geoscientific researchers working both on qualitative geological interpretation and quantitative geological modelling of the subsurface. Our projects are especially targeted on the near-surface part of the subsurface on- and offshore, with the aim at developing better subsurface models for e.g., mapping of groundwater, exploring raw material resources, identifying suitable areas for geothermal energy etc.

In this postdoc position you will be primarily engaged within the DECODE-3D project. A project funded by GeoCenter Denmark, with the aim of developing a series of new modelling concepts for a future national geological model.

Your qualifications

A relevant Ph.D. in Geophysics, Geology or similar, with a good understanding of topics like geostatistics, probabilistic data integration and/or machine learning. Experience with near surface geophysical methods and data like ERT, TEM, tTEM and near-surface seismics (e.g. MASW) in the context of glaciated landscapes will be an additional qualification. Knowledge of geotechnical techniques and methods will be considered a plus. Hands on experience with software development and scientific programming languages is key, specifically Matlab or Python. Additional experience with other computational languages is also an advantage as well as knowledge of geographical information systems (GIS) and databases. The candidate should have strong written and oral communication skills in English, and academic writing and willingness to learn Danish if not already native speaking. The right candidate will have the ability to work independently and in a team environment and be willing to collaborate with all members of the research team. We expect your active participation in the scientific community as well as documented research qualifications.

Department of Near Surface Land and Marine Geology

At the Department of Near Surface Land and Marine Geology we conduct research within a wide range of topics related to resources, process, and geology of the upper 300 meters of the subsurface on- and offshore. We have a long tradition for geological and near surface geophysical mapping and exploration on- and offshore and have a full shallow-marine geophysical mapping capacity and well data laboratory facilities.

Based in Aarhus, the department consists of 35 enthusiastic colleagues comprising of researchers, consultants, postdocs, technicians, and students.

GEUS is the national survey of Denmark and Greenland, with a substantial global outreach, giving you a possibility to participate in projects both locally and globally. For the coming years, GEUS and the SURFACE department are looking into a wide range of new, exciting projects for several purposes both on- and offshore.
