The Department of Political Science at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, invites applications for a postdoctoral or assistant professor position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join the research project on Cultivating the Union’s Foreign Relations: The EEAS and international diplomacy (EURDIPLO).
The starting date is 1 December 2019 or subject to mutual agreement.
The research project - EURDIPLO
EURDIPLO is a new research team focusing on how the European External Action Service (EEAS) makes choices, specifically when it comes to conflicting objectives. It brings together five researchers, mostly situated at the Department of Political Science and one at the think-tank Europa in Copenhagen. The team employ a variety of theories and methods (for details see the project description here). More particularly, EURDIPLO analyses how the EEAS interacts with the international institution of diplomacy (WP1), the practices of the EEAS in encounters with other EU institutions, member states and third countries, as well as multilateral institutions (WP2) the priorities of the EEAS concerning the nexus between policy paradigms and policies (WP3). It asks new questions about how the EEAS understands its role in contemporary international diplomacy. Using different data sources and methods, EURDIPLO aims to understand the life-world of the EEAS and its diplomats.
The research project is financed by the Danish funding programme for independent research (FSE) for the period 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2022 and led by Professor Knud Erik Jørgensen.
Job description
The position offers excellent opportunities to develop independent and collaborative research within the intersecting fields of International Relations, European Studies and Foreign Policy Analysis. The successful candidate will be involved in analysis at one or more of the three different work packages described above, including data collection and qualitative analysis.
The position is fixed-term of either two years with limited teaching obligations (postdoctoral researcher) or three years with more extensive teaching obligations (assistant professor). The final form of the position will be decided by the head of department taking the teaching demand of the department and the qualifications of the candidate into account.
Your qualifications
Applicants are expected to hold a PhD in political science or a related social science discipline.
In addition to interest in conducting independent and collaborative research within the focus area of EURDIPLO, applicants should preferably have the ability to conduct state-of-the-art research within the fields of diplomacy and foreign policy, excellent command of spoken and written English, and experience with publishing in international, peer-reviewed journals. More particularly, proven ability to have articles accepted in relevant IR journals will be considered an advantage. Strong methodological skills, especially regarding the application of interpretive methods, familiarity with elite interviews and preparedness to conduct field studies abroad are also preferred.
In addition to a CV, a letter motivating the application (addressing the match between the candidate’s profile and the core research task of EURDIPLO), proof of PhD degree, interested scholars should preferably provide a short research statement (max. 2000 words), which describes the research agenda the candidate proposes to pursue as part of EURDIPLO.
