The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Clinical Professor and chair in the field of Emergency Medicine as per 1 January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a combined position at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital Emergency Department and is a permanent full-time position.

Department of Clinical Medicine
As a clinical professor and chair at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialties and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square meters of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities and also advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the Master's degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicin. At the department we are approx. 425 academic employees and the same number of PhD students cooperating across disciplines. As a clinical professor and chair, you will be working on Aarhus University Hospital in the Central Denmark Region. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

Research Center for Emergency Medicine (RECEM)
As a clinical professor in emergency medicine, you will be chair of Research Center for Emergency Medicine (RECEM) (Center for Akutforskning). The center has its own research facilities attached to the Emergency Department. The staff includes 2 clinical professors, 2 associate professors, a halftime secretary and a halftime technical assistant. The center educates a steady stream of Ph.D.students, research year students and master degree students and the research activity is increasing. The research organization of RECEM is focused on the establishment of research networks, and RECEM is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research center. The center is a part of the Emergency Department and the Professor and Chair will be instrumental for the research in the Emergency Department. The research activity is considered a core element in the maintenance and development of the department’s functions and the research culture. RECEM also has a considerably research activity outside the Emergency Department at the university hospital and at the other Emergency Departments in Central Denmark Region.

As a clinical professor in emergency medicine, the professor will also carry a consultant position at the Emergency Department at Aarhus University Hospital. The consultant position is described in a separate advertisement.

Your job responsibilities
As Clinical Professor and chair in Emergency Medicine, you will have joint responsibility for the development of RECEMs and the Emergency Department's research and teaching environment, and you will contribute to the implementation of the faculty's overall research strategy. You are expected to contribute – both independently and in collaboration with others – to the development of RECEM and the Emergency Department by leading research of high international quality and contributing to ensuring a high academic and didactic standard in the teaching. Qua your excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network, you contribute to the academic development at Aarhus University and to the university’s profile both nationally and internationally.

Your main tasks will consist of:
  • As part of being Clinical Professor and Chair, you will also be the head of Research Center for Emergency Medicine (Center for Akutforskning)
  • Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
  • To contribute to the external research funding.
  • Assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
  • Research-based collaboration with private and public-sector stakeholders as well as research-based consultancy.
  • Dissemination of your research to the outside world.
  • Ability to influence regional and governmental regulatory authorities.
  • Further development of the diverse research activities at RECEM and in the Emergency Department. The success of the RECEM and the Emergency Department should be a driving force rather than the success of individuals.
  • Leadership for teaching of medical students
  • Contribution to the clinical development at the Emergency Department
  • Participation in the Emergency Departments leader team together with the head physician and the head nurse


During your employment at Aarhus University, you will report to the Head of Department Jørgen Frøkiær.

Appointment as Clinical Professor and chair requires simultaneous employment as consultant at Aarhus University Hospital, Emergency Department

Your competences
You have established yourself as a prominent clinical researcher within the field of Emergency Medicine, and you possess solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level. You have broad regional, national and international cooperative partnerships and great experience of research partnerships with private and public-sector stakeholders. You have also documented ability to attract external funding.

As a person, you are a helpful and motivational leader who inspires other researchers and builds trusting relationships with students, colleagues and partners. As a lecturer you communicate the newest and relevant knowledge in a committed, clear and comprehensible manner. As a supervisor you are competent, inspiring, supportive and responsible.

You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of RECEM and the Emergency Departments research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

You are part of the department leadership together with the head physician and the head nurse.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Clinical Professor position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Specialist in Emergency Medicine, alternatively specialist in a related specialty with a plan for obtaining specialty in Emergency Medicine.

Terms of employment
  • In making the appointment, emphasis will be placed on a high degree of original production at an internal level and experience from teaching at different levels as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material, hereby documenting that the applicant has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.
  • Moreover, there will be an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks.Further information on the appointment procedure can be found in the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities.
  • The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
