A position as associate professor or assistant professor (50 % time) combined with clinical/ administrative work (50 % time) is vacant at the Thrombosis Research Unit, the Department of Regional Health Research (IRS), Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the Section of Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Diagnostic Department, Hospital of South West Jutland. The position is limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension.
The research unit
The unit’s research area is primarily about understanding the underlying mechanisms, which affect the development of thrombosis and thrombosis-related inflammatory illnesses. A better understanding will contribute to the development of better prevention, diagnostics, monitoring, prognostics, and treatment of patients.
A central focus in the unit is the development and optimization of laboratory methods within coagulation, fibrinolysis, and immunothrombosis. This takes place in close collaboration with experienced technicians in our unit and with collaborators at the Cancer and Inflammation Research Unit, Department of Molecular Medicine, SDU. The methods are tested in clinical studies in collaboration with other clinical departments at the hospital. Additionally, the unit collaborates with national as well as international researchers.
The current staff of the Thrombosis Research Unit consists of a research secretary, three laboratory technicians, four PhD students, two clinical associate professors, one clinical professor, an associate professor, a professor and head of research, and additionally two adjunct professors.
The Thrombosis Research Unit is part of and located at the Clinical Diagnostic Department, Hospital of South West Jutland in Esbjerg as well as being a part of IRS, SDU.
The position
The position involves research, professional development, research education, teaching, including exams, supervision, assessment work, and a clinical part.
The focus will be on research related to thromboinflammation, coagulation, and fibrinolysis with particular emphasis on immunological techniques and development and optimization of biochemical laboratory methods at the Thrombosis Research Unit and application of these methods in clinical studies. The research area could include - yet is not limited to - the role of the contact system of blood coagulation. The position will include laboratory management at the Thrombosis Research Unit.
You will be expected to teach and supervise PhD students and undergraduate students, including students at the Master in Medicine in Esbjerg, as well as to maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding.
The clinical part of the job includes responsibility for the laboratory analyses used for the diagnosis of thrombosis patients at the Clinical Diagnostic Department, Hospital of South West Jutland and quality control of these methods. The clinical part must have a strong and inherent connection with the research part and must be discussed and established with the Head of Thrombosis Research Unit and the Head of Clinical Diagnostic Department, Hospital of South West Jutland. The content of the clinical part of the job will vary depending on the applicant’s professional background, experience, and qualifications.
Expectations of qualifications
Danish language skills are not required initially, however, should be mastered at proficiency level C1 at the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first 2 years of employment

- Research experience, preferentially within thrombosis research and/or biochemical laboratory research, documented by publications in international peer-reviewed journals
