In an interdisciplinary science project between the Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics (Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU)), the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (Faculty of Science, SDU) and the LUT School of Engineering Sciences (LUT University, Finland), we announce a three-year PhD position starting January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter within the project: “Digital Security Behavior”.The PhD project is fully funded by TrygFonden.

Job Description

The successful candidate will conduct research on consumer behavior, human-computer interaction, and digital security and be involved in the research project “Digital Security Behavior”. The research project will investigate how chatbots can be used to increase digital security behavior. While cyberattacks pose a pressing threat to an increasingly digitalized society, this project aims to investigate how chatbots, or more specifically digital security chatbots (i.e., DIGS chatbots), can be used to empower citizens to engage in digital security behaviors (e.g., choosing strong passwords, using privacy enhancing internet tools, logging out). Specifically, the PhD student is expected to provide answers to the following questions: How does citizens' interaction with a DIGS chatbot shape their subsequent digital security behavior? What factors determine citizens' decision to interact with a DIGS chatbot? The candidate will be responsible e.g., for data collection using qualitative and quantitative methods. The successful candidate will contribute, among others, to high-quality research.

The Project Team

The PhD student will work together with a team of experienced researchers:

  • Stefanie Sohn (PI, Department of Sociology, Environmental, and Business Economics, SDU Esbjerg). Stefanie has conducted research on consumer behavior and psychology using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Her main research interest covers an individuals’ responses to digital technologies.
  • Peter Mayer (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, SDU Odense). Peter’s research focuses on Usable IT Security. Specific research topics include the effectiveness and systematic development of information security awareness and education material, usable authentication technologies, and email security.
  • Oliver Schnittka (Department of Sociology, Environmental, and Business Economics, SDU Esbjerg). Oliver’s primary research interests are customer-interfacing strategies. In his research, which has been published in internationally recognized journals, he is studying, among others, consumer responses to social media. He has frequently conducted experiments and large-scale surveys.
  • Dominik Siemon (Department of Software Engineering, Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT University, Finland). His research in the field of information systems addresses the design of interactions with intelligent systems, such as chatbots.

The team collaborates closely with the Digital Democracy Centre (SDU Odense) and international researchers working on consumer behavior, human-chatbot interaction, and digital security.

The PhD Candidate

We invite candidates with a relevant master’s degree within social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, economics and business management). Only applicants with high grades will be considered for the position. In specific, we expect the qualified applicant to:

  • Have good English skills, both in speaking and writing.
  • Have good communicative skills.
  • Have enthusiasm for academic work and have shown interest in online/digital (security) behavior.
  • Be interested in working at the intersection between social science and computer science and learning about new perspectives and theories.
  • Have knowledge in quantitative research methods and be familiar with using software such as R, SPSS or alike.
  • Be ready for periods with intensive field work together with the project team and alone.
  • Be engaged, proactive, cooperative, be able to work independently, showing awareness and confidence in own skills and capabilities.

The PhD candidate will participate in a PhD program that includes an individual education program with course-work equivalent to 6 months. PhD research includes a stay at a research institute abroad and, over the period of the program, you will acquire experience of teaching or dissemination activities. The candidate is expected to participate in general research activities at the department.

The PhD applicant will be formally employed at the Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics (Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, SDU) and will also be affiliated with and working at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (Faculty of Science, SDU).

Your employment as a Salaried PhD Research Fellow is governed by the agreement of 10 November 2015 on Graduate Employees in government appendix 5 – protocol on PhD Research Fellows. The scholarship runs for three years.

  • A summary of your master thesis including information on the research question, motivation, employed research methods, and key findings (max 1 page of 2,400 characters each, including spaces, notes, appendices, bibliography etc.).
  • A PhD project proposal (max 5 pages of 2,400 characters each, including spaces, notes, appendices, bibliography etc.).
  • An abstract for the above project description of no more than 250 words.

Applications will be assessed by a committee. When the evaluation committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her.

Applications that are incomplete about the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee.
