Frederiksberg C

Associate Professor in Plant Membrane Trafficking
Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

One of the important research areas at Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences is in the mechanisms by which plants defend themselves against pathogens, aiming at developing novel means of resistance. We seek an associate professor to join these efforts starting from 1 August 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. Place of employment will be at Thorvaldsensvej 40, 1871 Frederiksberg C, Denmark.

Job description

In recent years it has been revealed that the immune response in plants has an important element of cellular re-programming, by which the cell activates polarized secretion and thereby positions defence components in the wall at the site of attack. This phenomenon in the cross-field of immunity and cell biology builds on the plant’s highly complex membrane trafficking system, which pathogens in turn counteract by help of effector proteins transferred to the cytosol of the plant cell.

The associate professor will be affiliated with the group of Defence Genetics at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, and will be central to a project funded over a 6-year period by the Novo Nordic Foundation (entitled “A new paradigm for disease-free crops of tomorrow”). To meet the success criteria defined for the project, we are looking for strong candidates who are capable of developing and leading research with the specific aims described in the granted project. These concern how membrane trafficking contributes to immunity towards filamentous pathogens, which seriously affect crops, and how insight in these details can be exploited for resistance.

The candidate should during this period develop an independent research group with a unique profile. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to engage in teaching and supervision on undergraduate and graduate level on related topics. The candidate will likewise be expected to strengthen and be part of developing the relevant teaching areas.

Required qualifications
The applicant should hold professional as well as personal skills and qualifications as stated below:

  • PhD degree in plant molecular biology or related area
  • Profound insight in plant immunity, membrane trafficking and the interplay of those
  • Practical experience in plant genetics, molecular and cell biology as well as plant immunology
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Pedagogical training
  • Teaching and project supervision experience in named fields
  • Be excellent in English, writing and speech

Key criteria for the assessment of candidates

  • Professional qualifications relevant to the position
  • Publications

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications.
