Frederiksberg C

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Plant Nutrition and Biotechnology commencing 01.06.2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The PhD research will be carried out within a project from the Independent Research Fund Denmark that investigates the molecular basis of zinc nutrition and homeostasis in plants, and strategies for developing zinc biofortification in crops. The student will be part of the Plant and Soil Science Section at the Department, under the supervision of Ass. Prof. Ana Assuncao.

Project description
Zinc is an essential micronutrient for plants and animals because of its structural and catalytic roles in many proteins. However zinc deficiency in soils and in human diet is a global problem, affecting mainly populations living on plant-based diets that rely on crops from zinc deficient soils. Plants maintain adequate zinc levels through tightly regulated zinc homeostasis mechanisms that include zinc uptake, transport and distribution. In our research group we study the molecular basis of this zinc homeostasis regulatory network and the zinc deficiency response, both in the model plant Arabidopsis and in the important crop rice. The aim of the PhD project will be to further analyse these regulatory networks, with a focus on F-bZIP transcription factors and the zinc sensing molecular mechanism. The tasks will involve a combination of approaches including molecular biology, genetics, mass-spectrometry, element analysis and bioimaging.
