Frederiksberg C

Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher who has experience in phage-host interactions for a 3 year position as Assistant Professor to commence 1 June 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Information about the Department can be found at: http://ikvh.ku.dk/english/.

Our research

Antibiotic resistant bacteria are one of modern society’s major challenges and alternative solutions are urgently needed. Bacteriophages are bacteria-killing microorganisms that occur naturally in all environments, only targeting specific bacteria ensuring that the normal microflora is preserved. The concept of using bacteriophages to control bacteria in food and primary production in biocontrol strategies is currently advancing worldwide providing such alternative solutions.

Information about the research group in Phage biology and biocontrol can be found at: http://ivh.ku.dk/english/research/food_safety_and_zoonoses/phages/

Your job

Your tasks would be to identify and characterize bacteriophages infecting E. coli at the genetic and phenotypic level, investigating the specificity of phage killing of E. coli as well as determining the mechanisms of host recognition and resistance development. You will collaborate with industry as well as experts in technology development and primary production. The results will be used in a new biocontrol strategy against E. coli in primary production and will lead to discovery of novel biological mechanisms within phage diversity and phage-bacteria interactions expected to lead to publications in high-ranking international journals. Finally, you contribute to other projects in the research group with your competencies, skills or lab work and are actively engaged in writing grant proposals.

The assistant professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • research as well as research dissemination in international journals
  • sharing knowledge with society, including industry

  • You have a documented record of publications within the area of phage-host interactions
  • You have an active interest in developing phage solutions for industry
  • You have pre- and postgraduate teaching experience within food microbiology and novel solutions for combatting pathogenic bacteria in the food chain
