Job description
The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at University of Copenhagen has a long tradition in the field of microbial food safety and biology of food-associated pathogens and now wishes to reinforce this position by appointing an Associate Professor og Molecular Microbial Food Safety. Foodborne pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter remain a societal challenge effecting both consumer health and wellbeing. Although food safety traditionally is high in Denmark some pathogens continue to cause a high number of food-borne infections with Campylobacter being the most dominant. The inability to prevent those infections is likely associated with a lack of understanding of the biology of the bacterium as well as of how it survives and spreads in food production chains.

The position as Associate Professor deals with aspects of microbial food safety with particular emphasis on molecular biology and physiology of foodborne bacterial pathogens. The successful candidate should master tools for molecular characterization and genetic manipulations of major food borne bacterial pathogens to prevent their occurrence and transmission in the food chain and have expertise in whole genome sequence analysis using relevant bioinformatic tools. Further the candidate should have a broad knowledge of traditional methods in food microbiology and is expected to explore alternative approaches to improving food safety in the entire food production chain. Research funding should be sought from national and international funding sources.

The associate professorship will be placed within the Section of Food Safety and Zoonoses and is expected to collaborate with relevant staff at the department and establish national and international networks. At the international level the associate professorship should seek cooperation with the strongest players in the field and also strengthen collaboration with relevant industrial partners.

At the educational level, the associate professorship will be central in teaching microbial food safety and molecular bacteriology to students in Veterinary, Food Science and Biotechnology curricula involving both undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. Teaching activities are expected to be continuously developed in collaboration with relevant partners both inside and outside the Department. In general, the candidate should have excellent oral and written skills in communicating food safety issues to both experts and non-experts.

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research including attracting research funding and publishing in international scientific journals and other academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching including associated examination
  • Research-based support of the veterinary contingency program
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Find information about each criterion here:https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/criteria-for-recognising-merit.

Furthermore, each applicant must beable to document:

  • Research experience in molecular studies of bacterial food borne pathogens
  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies
  • Research-based teaching

The associate professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The position is a permanent position. The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.
