The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a full position as a teaching assistant professor in Companion Animal Surgery, starting from April 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will be part of the companion animal surgery group of the Section for Surgery, Neurology and Cardiology.
The position is focused on planning and executing clinical teaching within companion animal cardiology. The teaching does not require new research.
Information on the Department can be found at: http://www.sund.ku.dk/ and www.ikv.ku.dk/english.
About the Department
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences covers strong and internationally recognized research areas in clinical veterinary sciences. Based on these, we want to set a new standard for cross-disciplinary research, education, and innovation within animal health and disease and be among the best public workplaces in Denmark. Our research supports teaching in a manner and quality, securing continued national and international benchmarking.
The department's culture is typical Scandinavian: a flat structure with a tradition for close collaboration where all employees expect openness, mutual respect, and sharing of ideas, resources, and competencies.
About the Surgery Group
Companion animal surgery is a core discipline in the clinical veterinary curriculum as part of veterinary education in Denmark. The companion animal surgery service is led by Professor James Miles, a national specialist in companion animal surgery, and consists of researchers and clinical teachers specialized in this field alongside PhD and master students. The Companion Animal Surgery group runs a high throughput clinical referral service as well as a general surgery clinic, receiving companion animal patients (dogs and cats) and forming the basis for clinical teaching of veterinary and postgraduate master students (www.cacs.ku.dk). It provides surgical teaching labs and theoretical teaching for veterinary students. In addition, the specialist clinics for anesthesia, oro-maxilliofacial surgery and dentistry, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation fall under the surgical umbrella.
The surgery group has collaborative research with national and international research groups within osteoarthritis and assessment of lameness, stifle joint diseases, and muscle function, animal models of human disease, dentistry, and teaching, among other research subjects.
About the Position
The teaching assistant professor will be mainly responsible for teaching veterinary students and post-graduate master’s students in companion animal surgery, as well as interacting with and assisting faculty in developing new teaching strategies. In addition, the teaching assistant professor will assist faculty in supervising younger clinicians in clinical surgery training and running the surgical teaching labs. The teaching assistant professor’s primary role is envisaged to be within general surgery, with an increasing role in the specialist clinic, and with the possibility of a surgical residency position in the future.
Experience with online learning platforms, course management, and development of teaching materials will be an advantage.
