Professor on Environmental Ethics with focus on Nature Conservation and Management
Department of Food and Resource Economics
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

The Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) looks to raise the profile of its research, teaching, and outreach within Environmental Ethics by opening a professorship in this area. We are looking for the ability to contribute to both theory development and empirical work. The professor will be engaged in research within their discipline, and in collaboration with colleagues at the department and elsewhere, as well as in interdisciplinary work related to environmental and climate issues. A key aspect is to understand ways to act according to different views of nature and to different nature conservation and management approaches which give rise to ethical dilemmas and conflicts.

We expect applicants to have an academic background either within philosophy with specialization in environmental ethics and nature conservation and management, or an environmental and nature management background, specializing in philosophical and applied ethical aspects. We expect applicants to possess documented theoretical and empirical research competence of a high international standard within Environmental Ethics including

    • issues relating to nature and wildlife conservation and management
    • sustainability issues
    • environmental and nature conflicts

The professor is expected to maintain a significant record of publication at the highest level, to encourage research achievement, and to nurture a research culture within their research group. Fund raising, external collaboration, and active participation in research networks will be a specific priority for the professor in order to enhance and sustain the development of departmental research activities. The department will support the professor in this task. The professor is expected to disseminate his/her research to multiple stakeholders outside of the university (including policy makers, NGOs, and the industry) and pursue societal impact of their research.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competences and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. In addition, outreach to society is expected, and contributions to advisory work could become relevant. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department. Finally, the professor will be expected to contribute to management and leadership through engagement with and participation in Department and Faculty governance structures.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants and their ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.

The professor is expected to be based at the Section of Environment and Natural Resources, but if the profile match better elsewhere, it can be changed. The professor is expected to collaborate broadly within and outside the Department. In all sections, social scientists from several disciplines undertake research to address the critical challenges society face with respect to protecting our planet, its climate, environment and life, the sustainability of global natural resource-based sectors like the agro-food sector, fishery and forestry, and the link between development and natural resources use. The Department of Food and Resource Economics is uniquely placed in the enviable role of undertaking research, educations and public-sector services of international excellence in these fields and with significant impact in the scientific community, on policy and practice.

Further information on the Department is available at http://ifro.ku.dk/english. Inquiries about the position can be made to Head of Department, Professor Bo Jellesmark Thorsen, [email protected]; +45 2013 8345 and/or Head of Section Jette Bredahl Jacobsen, [email protected], +45 2114 7912.
