Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen

We are offering a PhD fellowship in applied canine cancer genetics and utility of liquid biopsies for classification of brain tumours commencing October 1st 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Our group and research

Our research group focuses mainly on comparative cancer genetics with particular focus on bringing research from bench to bedside in an applicable manner.

Project description

Intracranial neoplasia in dogs represents a diagnostic dilemma for veterinarians due to the high risk of complications, when trying to pursue a histopathological diagnosis. Many dogs are not accurately diagnosed which creates problems for prognostication and treatment planning. Further, clinical research studies in canine intracranial tumours of veterinary and comparative human value have limited significance due to uncertainty regarding the histopathological diagnosis. This project will investigate somatic mutations and mutational signatures in paired tumour normal tissue, from dogs with confirmed intracranial neoplasia.

Subsequently we will investigate the presence of cell free and circulating tumour DNA in the peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid from the same dogs, by detecting and quantifying the presence of tumour specific mutations. This study will provide an insight into the feasibility of using liquid biopsies for classification of intracranial neoplasia in dogs.
