Frederiksberg

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship at the Department of International Economics, Government and Business (EGB).

Expected starting date 1 January 2022 (negotiable).

EGB is a multidisciplinary department, which conducts high-quality research in the fields of international business and political science with direct relevance to business, policy-makers and the public. Research at the department focuses on two principal focus areas (I) Business & Government and (II) International Business in relation to societal challenges. To learn more about the research and education profile of the department, please visit the departmental homepage here. We call for PhD projects in the area of ‘Business & Government’. Here political science and political economy research focuses on the intersection between business and government and how relations between business and government affect and are shaped by the surrounding political, economic, and societal environment. Faculty apply advanced quantitative and qualitative methods to generate systematic knowledge about business-government relations. The focus is on theoretically grounded empirical research that improves our understanding of government and the relations between business and politics – with practical relevance for policy makers.

The Sino Danish Center (SDC) co-finances this PhD scholarship. The PhD project is expected to contribute to the SDC social science research project “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in China”, please see here for a more information. PhD proposals may address, but are not limited to, aspects such as:
  1. Governance, principles and constraints of Chinese state-led AI development policies
  2. Role of national Chinese AI open innovation platforms; and/or
  3. Interaction of Chinese and foreign firms/actors in AI ecosystems

The PhD is co-hosted by the School of Economics and Management at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). The prospective PhD candidate will spend at least 12 months at UCAS. She/he will contribute to the educational activities at SDC in Beijing. Knowledge of Chinese language is an advantage but no formal pre-requisite. Chinese citizens including citizens from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao are not eligible for this PhD position. Please see here for SDC specific requirements.

About the PhD Programme
The three-year PhD programme at CBS allows candidates to conduct research under the supervision of CBS faculty, supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international. Candidates are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. See the CBS homepage for more information about the PhD programme, http://uk.cbs.dk/phd.

CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. One third of CBS PhD graduates go on to employment outside universities and public research institutions. Recent EGB graduates have been successfully placed at Texas A&M University and Cornell University.

Qualifications
The department will give priority to applicants with excellent grades from their universities. CBS has a broad commitment to the excellence, distinctiveness and relevance of its teaching and research programmes. Candidates who wish to join us should demonstrate enthusiasm for working in an organisation of this type (highlighting, for example, relevant experience in academia, business, educational and dissemination activities).

At the time of enrolment, the applicant must have completed an academically relevant master’s degree according to the Bologna process (3-year bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) and 2-year master’s degree (120 ECTS)) or equivalent qualifications. The minimum grade requirements are a weighted grade point average of at least 8.2 on the Danish 7-point grading scale for the entire programme (i.e. for both the bachelor’s and master’s studies), and at least the grade 10 on the Danish 7-point grading scale for any final thesis or equivalent examination project.
