Glostrup

PostDoc for pre-clinical testing of novel stroke treatments

A 2-year Researcher or Postdoc position at the Clinical Experimental Research Department – Stroke Unit

We are looking for an outstanding and highly motivated candidate with a strong background in ischemic research. The current position (possible project-start is 1st of May 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter) and is a 2-year project position, where the research has a clear translational aim. The workplace is localized in Forskerparken, at Rigshospitalet in Glostrup and the position is at the Clinical and Experimental Research Department - Stroke Unit. You will primary work with a rodent stroke model and long-term behavior testing using Anymaze technology. The applicant must hold animal experimental work qualifications equal to function A/D according to the EU Directive 2010/63/EU Article 23.2 (previously designated category B). Function A/B/D (previously designated category FELASA C) is an advantage. Due to the urgent nature of this position, applicants without documentation of these qualifications will unfortunately not be considered.

The workplace

The Stroke Unit is a subdivision under the Department of Clinical Experimental Research (lead by Prof. Lars Edvinsson). We have developed a mode-of-action hypothesis of stroke pathophysiology leading to a novel concept of stroke treatment, proven. Cessation of cerebral blood flow activates a vascular injury pathway through extracellular matrix molecules. This results in enhanced transcription of key receptors, cytokines and BBB breakdown proteins, that together exacerbate cerebral damage. Targeting one intracellular gene-transcription pathway, we have shown that stroke outcome is strongly linked to activation of this vascular injury pathway. We want to further pursue this pathway, with particular focus on long-term behavior outcome.

Your profile:

You should be a proactive and enthusiastic researcher with:

  • A PhD degree in Life sciences or similar.
  • The applicant MUST hold animal experimental work qualifications equal to function A/D according to the EU Directive 2010/63/EU Article 23.2 (previously designated category B) or function A/B/D (previously designated category FELASA C)
  • No more than 5 years must have elapsed since your PhD degree, leaves of absence (e.g. maternity/paternity leaves) can be subtracted.
  • Experience in stroke is strong advantage, preferably experience with the following rodent-models in prioritized order: 1) middle cerebral artery occlusion, 2) subarachnoid hemorrhage, or 3) global ischemia
  • Experience with behavior testing of rodents, such as mazes, open-field or new-object recognition is an advantage.
  • Strong English communication skills, orally and in writing.
  • Excellent collaborative skills.

Your tasks

The practical work includes performing rodent surgery, particular stroke models. The outcome will be determined with an advanced set of behavior tests, using the Anymaze system. The animals will receive various treatment regiments, preferably through intra-peritoneal injections. Experience with animals is therefore a requirement. Furthermore, there will be collaborations with other researchers in-house. In addition to the importance of further development towards a clinical treatment, we aim to publish findings in international, recognized scientific journals.

Your position

You will be employed for a two-year period in a full-time position at the Department of Clinical Experimental Research at Rigshospitalet Glostrup where you will be part of the Stroke Unit. You will be hired as a PostDoc.
