Introduction
The Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) program addresses the crucial challenges of youth economic exclusion and lack of civic inclusion of youth. Funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), YPE is part of MFA’s ‘Danish-Arab Partnership Programme’ (DAPP). Established in 2003, the vision of DAPP is to promote a democratic, prosperous, and stable Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through partnerships between Danish and Arab actors. The YPE focuses on involving young people in their countries’ development and strengthening employment opportunities and entrepreneurship in inclusive ways. Youth participation is crucial for reducing inequalities as well as for including young women, young people from rural and urban areas, youth with disabilities and other marginalized groups of youth.
The YPE program is embarking on a youth mapping research, as set out in these Terms of Reference in order to obtain a more diversified and complete overview of formal and informal youth-led groups, organisations, platforms and initiatives relating to economic participation of youth in the MENA region.
We are now looking for a young Technical Researcher based in Jordan which is one of the four countries involvedfor the period January 2020 – March 2021 in order to contribute to the mapping process, coordinate and gather the research findings in Jordan as part of a wider regional mapping.
The Technical Researcher will work together with a Community Networker[NK1] in Jordan in a research team. Together, they will lead and contribute to the mapping process in Jordan. The research team (Community Networker and Technical Researcher) will report to the Regional Research Coordinator who has the overall responsibility of the mapping and is coordinating and leading the mapping from a regional perspective.
Purpose and objectives
The purpose of the Technical Researcher is to work closely with the Community Networker to identify youth change makers in the area of economic participation learn about their objectives, challenges, needs, opportunities, and collaboration and networks. Your role as technical researcher is to identify interview methods and tools and document the interviews (by recording/filming and/or note taking, and transcribing/summarizing the interviews). The role of the Community Networker in the research is to identify actors, make contact, and conduct the interviews. Together, you will analyse the results and identify and document conclusions, recommendations and lessons learned.
The Technical Researcher and the Community Networker [RA2] work together as a national research team under the supervision and support of the Regional Research Coordinator to implement the youth mapping in Jordan ensuring that the process runs smoothly and reaches its objectives. In particular, the objectives of the position are to:

Profile of the Technical Researcher
Researcher below 30[RA3] years old with strong experience in conducting in person and remote research, designing and applying research methodologies, use of offline and online data collection tools and data analysis, and documentation, ideally relating to economic participation of youth. You have technical skills in recording videos and editing video clips to use in the mapping. The working language is Arabic while language of (written) documentation is English. You are familiar with relevant data protection policies including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and taking every reasonable precaution to ensure that any (digital) data or content does not place people at risk or render them vulnerable to any form of harassment, abuse or exploitation.

Role and tasks of the technical researcher
Identify interview methods and tools
- Identify potential methods to document the result of the interview together with the Regional Research Coordinator
- Working closely with the Regional Research Coordinator to agree on a method and tool(s) for the interviews
- Design, organise and acquire tools to document the result of the interviews (including e.g. a voice recorder, video camera, video editing software)
Gather and documenting the findings
- Support the Community Networker in planning and conducting short interviews with youth-led groups according to agree upon timelines
- Document the interviews using the agreed upon method and tools (e.g. by recording/filming and/or note taking, and transcribing/summarising the interviews).
- Recording and editing videos from the interviews if necessary
- Adhering to all relevant data protection policies including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and taking every reasonable precaution to ensure that any (digital) data or content does not place people at risk or render them vulnerable to any form of harassment, abuse or exploitation.
Planning, coordinating, and implementing the process of the mapping
- Participating in the online workshops and regional and international meetings (online and if possible offline)
- Participating in the online kick-off with the team in all the countries consisting of the research team of each country as well as the Youth Boards
- Contributing to the discussion on the framework of the data gathering process
- Assisting the Community Networker and the Regional Research Coordinator to agree on an approach, framework, and timeline for the process
- Assisting the Community Networker to find youth actors and identifying a wide diversity of youth actors in each country
- Set up meetings and participate in meetings with the Youth Board and the Regional Research Coordinator to seek and implement advise on improvements and gaps.
Identify and document lessons learned on the overall mapping process
- Analyse and make sense of the research findings to arrive at comprehensible findings, conclusions, and recommendations specific to the country context
- Actively participate in the evaluation meetings set by the Regional Coordinator to ensure documenting lesson learned and contributing to the narrative reporting.
- Contribute to documentation of outcomes, analysis, reports, and visual material.
Deliverables
The specific outputs are:
- A longlist of formal and informal youth-led groups, organisations, platforms, and initiatives relating to economic participation of youth in the country.
- A short country report synthesising the interviews conducted with youth actors, incorporating their perspectives, needs and priorities.
- One or more cases in the form of video or other material to share results from the country reports and be used for initial communication purposes.
- A learning note on the process.
Profile of the Technical Researcher
