Do you want to take part in the foremost research to understand how gut microbes affect disease development?

Visualization of microbes and host interactions using new advanced high-resolution imaging technology

Molecular Diagnostic and Clinical Research Unit, University Hospital of Southern Denmark, and Department of Regional Health Research, SDU is looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship within the field of IBD, advanced microscopy, and pathology.

Project description
Our understanding of the development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) remains incomplete, but likely involves an interaction between factors such as diet, gut microbes, and genetic risk factors. Understanding how these factors work together is key for understanding the modern world diseases.

Helium Ion Microscopy (HIM) is a new advanced technology that enables visualisation of microbes and human cells at high resolutions allowing for resolving fine structures, without the need for coating e.g. used in electron microscopy.
This project will combine confocal immunofluorescence microscopy with ultra-high resolution HIM to, for the first time, visualise the interaction between microbes and host-epithelium structures.

Research environment
The PhD student will be a member of the focused and ambitious research unit “Molecular Diagnostic and Clinical Research Unit” (MOK) located at University Hospital of Southern Denmark. Members of this group include 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Postdoc and 6 PhD students, with the research focus of molecular biology and health.
Our task is to generate research results for translation into clinical practice to develop personal medicine (diagnosis, prognosis, treatment selection, and prevention), with the perspective of improved treatment strategies for the individual patients.
The research is focusing on patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, and work with various methods in collaboration with other specialist researchers and patient representatives.

The PhD project is a collaboration between The University Hospital of Southern Denmark, University of Southern Denmark, the Mads Clausen Institute at Alsion, Sønderborg and Aalborg University, and include experts in confocal immunofluorescence microscopy, pathology, and HIM.
The work will primarily be performed at University Hospital of Southern Denmark and Alsion but may include a research visit to Aalborg University.

Qualifications
Our ideal candidate have a relevant Master’s degree (MD, MSc. etc.) with acquired competences within the fields of pathology and/or microscopy.
This project is in the cross field of pathology and microscopy, and the applicant must have an education given knowledge within one of the fields and an interest in gaining knowledge within the other field.

Mails regarding questions for this declaration of interest must be named “HIM PhD applicant” in the subject line.

Applications must include:

• At letter stating the interest, motivation and qualifications for the project (max. 2 pages) - upload under “Application form”
• Detailed CV, including personal contact information
• Certified copy of diploma (Master’s degree in a relevant field)

Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply online".

Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated. This also applies to reference letters.

Closing date: April 11, 2021

The PhD study is expected to be initiated September 1st, 2021 or hereafter.

The applicant will work together with the team on preparation of the project description for enrolment at the PhD school, University of Southern Denmark, and securing missing finances for the project. Already, some finances are ensured.

Successful candidates will be asked to send an application to the PhD Secretariat, Faculty of Health Sciences, to be enrolled as PhD students.

The PhD programme will be carried out in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order)

The terms of employment as a salaried PhD Research Fellow are stated in the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
