A position as Associate Professor or Clinical Associate Professor (50 %) combined with clinical/ administrative work (50 %) is vacant as soon as possible at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at the Spine Medicine Research Unit, Spine Centre of Southern Denmark, Lillebaelt Hospital, respectively.

The position is open to health professionals with special interest and documented experience in the field of spine diseases and/or rehabilitation.

The position is limited to 5 years with the possibility of extension.

The Spine Medicine Research Unit

The current staff of the Spine Medicine Research Unit consists of a research secretary, a data manager, and a project coordinator, all of whom are fully founded by the department.

The research staff consists of two clinical associate professors and four PhD-students. Additionally, two adjunct professors are affiliated with the research unit. The associate professor will be Head of Research and will to some extent have the opportunity to set up his or her own team through the resources allocated for research.

The research unit specifically focusses on

  • Diagnostic tests, for example specific pain tests and findings on MRI
  • Pain treatment and pain management
  • Individually planned exercise
  • Maintaining function in the home and at the workplace.

The Spine Medicine Research Unit collaborates with several other units and departments at Lillebaelt Hospital, several departments at SDU, regional hospitals, and has national as well as international contacts.

The Spine Centre of Southern Denmark, a department at Lillebaelt Hospital

The Spine Centre of Southern Denmark’s key task is, at specialist level, to investigate, treat and guide the spine patients in the region according to the individual’s needs. The overall goal is to increase the quality of life of spine patients.

We are known to have at a high rate of patient satisfaction, and we receive spine patients from all of the Region of Southern Denmark. On a yearly basis we receive approximately 18,000 new referrals and operate on approximately 1,000 patients.

Research is a highly prioritized area with great research activity within the fields of both spine medicine and spine surgery. Additionally, we have a lot of educational activity and welcome trainees in many disciplines.

The academic position

The associate professor will be appointed at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU. The position will be within spine medicine and focus areas could include, yet are not limited to, diagnostics, prognosis, and treatment. Trans-sectional research and collaboration is expected.

The job involves research, professional development, research education, teaching, including exams, supervision and assessment work within the field of spine medicine.

The clinical position

The content of the clinical part of the job will vary depending on the applicant’s professional background, experience and qualifications. Both clinical and research duties must have a strong and inherent connection and must be discussed and established with the hospital management. Depending on clinical qualifications and experience, the clinical duties can include treatment of outpatients, supervision of students and the role as a resource person in relation to internal and external conference (the function as specialist advisor).

Expectations and qualifications

The successful applicant has a PhD or equivalent post-graduate research qualifications. Additionally, the applicant must have skills in both clinical aspects and research within the field of mechanical back pain and/or rehabilitation.

  • A PhD degree or equivalent post-graduate research qualification
  • Relevant research experience documented by publications in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Relevant clinical experience
  • A successful track record in obtaining research funding

Danish is required initially. The required language skills will depend on the nature of tasks in the clinical/administrative part of the job and will be discussed in connection with the employment. However, in relation to clinical work, i.e. work with patients, the associate professor is required to master Danish at proficiency level C1 on the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first year of employment. SDU offers specialized language courses in cooperation with the language centre Lærdansk.

The associate professor will refer to the Head of the Department at the Spine Centre of Southern Denmark, Jakob Blaabjerg Espesen in matters concerning the clinical part of the job, and to the Head of Department of Regional Health Research, Rikke Leth-Larsen in matters regarding the professorship.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between The Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
