A combined position as Clinical Professor in Oncology (40%) and as Consultant Oncologist (60%) is vacant at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at the Department of Oncology, Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle.

The posts are considered as one entity. The professorship is limited to 5 years with the possibility of extension.

The academic position

The clinical professor will be appointed at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU. The position will be in clinical oncology and with a special focus on translational research in oncology.

Qualifications

The applicant must have substantial skills in clinical and translational research in oncology.

The scientific level of the applicant will be expected to be high with national as well as international cooperation. The applicant’s ability to establish, lead, and further develop research settings that encourage research will be assessed. Emphasis will be on the applicant´s ability to document original scientific production at an international level within the area of cancer research and oncology.

In addition, commitment to teaching and the ability to lead a research group, including experience with supervision of master’s students, PhD students and postdocs will be required.

Furthermore, the candidate must have a successful record in obtaining research funding, experience with oral, written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Documented experience as head of large research projects will be an advantage. In addition, the applicant is expected to be qualified in academic teaching as an associate professor or equivalent.

The professor’s obligations will primarily be:

  • To consolidate and further develop the research in oncology within the department and in cancer at the hospital level
  • Research related to oncology, cancer, and translational research
  • Supervision of PhD students, health staff and health care persons under training, interns and medical students
  • Knowledge sharing with society including participation in the public debate
  • Research management, counselling and supervision of assistant professors and researchers
  • Teaching undergraduate students
  • Assessment work

The clinical position

The clinician will be appointed as consultant at the Department of Oncology, Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle.

Qualifications

The applicant must be a specialist in clinical oncology and qualified as a consultant in clinical oncology with further subspeciality expert qualifications.

The applicant will be expected to take a leading role within his or her own clinical expert subspeciality in cooperation with the other consultants in the section. The obligations are to participate 60% of the time of the position in clinical consulting duties. This will include close contact and hands-on work in one or several of the department’s teams.

Familiarity with all non-surgical treatment modalities will be required. The applicant will be expected to cooperate with internal and external partners in the field of oncology.

Other obligations and requirements

The applicant will be expected to front the oncology also in the public debate. Moreover, the applicant will be expected to perform public duties, i.e. to chair commissions and boards etc.

It will be expected that the new clinical professor can speak and write Danish or another Nordic language fluently.

In addition to academic writing and tasks, the applicant will be expected to be able to teach, supervise and communicate with colleagues, patients and the media.

Vejle Hospital is part of Lillebaelt Hospital. The hospital has a specialist function in cancer.

Clinically, Lillebaelt Hospital, with a staff of around 5.000 persons, comprises the units in Vejle, Kolding and Middelfart. Academically, Lillebaelt Hospital is part of the University Hospital of Southern Denmark.

The Department of Oncology

The Department of Oncology is a specialised department within the Region of Southern Denmark, providing non-surgical care to patients with breast, lung, colorectal, anal, pancreatic, skin and gynaecologic cancers.

Management

The department is headed by Head Physician Lars Henrik Jensen and Head Nurse Dorthe Kronborg.

Organisation

The department contains two bed sections with specific functions in supportive care and in specialised palliative care, respectively, outpatient clinic, a radiotherapy unit, a patient hotel and a palliative care unit. The department is divided into three diagnosis-specific teams that work across sections. We are characterised by a great professional commitment and focus on patients' needs. We are known for our well-functioning user council, where patients and relatives, among other things, contribute with ideas for new initiatives.

The department has a standard of 240 full-time positions divided into:

  • 54 doctors (31 specialists and 23 doctors in training).
  • 137 nursing staff
  • 49 secretaries, hospital physicists, technicians, physiotherapists, social workers, psychologists, biomedical laboratory technicians, dietitians, etc.

Clinical services

We deliver care in three main areas: medical cancer treatment, radiotherapy and palliative care.

Teaching

The department is teaching medical students at the University of Southern Denmark and performs doctors’ specialist training in clinical oncology.

Research

Research at our department aims at improving the lives of our patients. We focus on patient-centred research and translational research. The current research activity is exemplified by our publication list:

The clinical research unit is led by a doctor, and eight project coordinators. A research secretary supports investigator-initiated trials and industry sponsored trials in a highly efficient way.

Academically, 10-12 PhD students, post.doc., two professors and two associate professors perform the research together with a research competent clinical staff counting both doctors, physicists and nurses.

Vertically, we cover all the cancer groups in the clinic. Horizontally, we deploy shared decision making, extensive collaboration with other clinical departments and the laboratory centre, translational research, quantitative quality of live and qualitative methods to fulfil the research aim. Specifically, the Centre of Clinical Excellence in Colorectal Cancer is used as a beachhead to implement new research methods.

The Department of Regional Health Research

The Department of Regional Health Research supports research in relation to the person as a whole, the good life and the more common diseases, makes out a platform for scientists and educators and builds a bridge between University of Southern Denmark, The Region of Southern Denmark, The Region of Zealand, the hospitals in the two regions and the patient. The department focuses on the continuity of patient care across sectors, hospitals and specialist fields
