The Department of Political Science and Public Management, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a number of permanent positions in political science and journalism as of June 1, 2023, or as agreed.

The call includes the following two types of positions:

  • Full professorships
  • Associate professorships with promotion programme to full professor

With this call, the department is looking for strong profiles that can contribute to one of the department’s five research sections i.e. Danish Centre for Welfare Studies, Center of War Studies, Section of Public Administration and Management, Centre for Journalism, and/or Centre of Border Region Studies.

The department values a diversity of competences and profiles. The expectations for a full professorship and for the associate professorship with promotion programme at the department are described in the Scholarly Qualification Matrix – REEAD for the Department of Political Science and Public Management. Based on the criteria in the Scholarly Qualification Matrix – REEAD, the applicants must present a clear academic profile. By academic profile, the department understands the combined quality of research, education, external funding, academic citizenship, and dissemination.

The successful applicants will be affiliated with one of the department’s five sections and centres. The individual applicant is expected to outline how their academic profile and future research plans contribute to the strategy and current activities in one of these units. In addition to the criteria in the Scholarly Qualification Matrix – REEAD, it is important that applicants have good interpersonal skills and are dedicated to take part in the everyday professional and social environment at the department. Within a three-year period, applicants with no current Danish skills must master the language at a level which enables them to read Danish exam papers and administrative documents (free language courses will be offered).

The position as associate professor on the promotion programme

SDU offers particularly talented associate professors employment with the possibility to enter into a promotion programme that can lead to employment as professor. To become employed as an associate professor on the promotion programme, the candidate must both qualify to work as an associate professor now and demonstrate the potential to transition into a position as a professor at the end of the programme. Both will be based on the department´s entry criteria Scholarly Qualification Matrix – REEAD.

An associate professor is usually on the promotion program for a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 8 years. During the programme, there will be annual interviews with the head of section, who assess if the associate professor is ‘on track’. The programme ends with a final assessment before transitioning to professorship.

Applicants who want to be considered for the promotion programme must submit a promotion plan with the application.

Application, salary, etc.

The applicant must clearly state which position is applied for.

Appointment to the positions will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

An application for the professorship must include:

  • A cover letter (including the applicant’s motivation to apply for the specific position)
  • Detailed CV, including the required documentation of the REEAD criteria and any periods of leave
  • An elaborated research plan (describing the applicant’s plans for future research, funding, collaborations, and publications covering the next 4-5 years (max 4 pages).
  • An elaborated teaching portfolio (Formal application instructions and a teaching portfolio guide is found here.)
  • Certificates/Diplomas (Master and PhD degree, and relevant additional education in research, teaching, and management)
  • Complete list of publications, indicating which publications are most relevant for the position
  • Up to 5 publications relevant for the position for qualitative assessment. Please upload a pdf for each publication. If the publication has been co-authored, co-author statements describing own contribution and role MUST be a part of this pdf file. Click here to see an example of such a document.

  • Certificates/Diplomas (Master and PhD degree, and relevant additional education in research, teaching, and management)

All non-Danish documents must be translated into English.

Incomplete applications will be desk rejected without any substantial evaluation.

Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.

Applicants’ qualifications will be assessed by an assessment committee. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material. When the assessment committee has submitted its report, applicants will receive the part of the assessment that concerns themselves. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences who will form an appointment committee. The appointment committee will manage and complete a series of job interviews with especially promising applicants.

Based on information from the entire recruitment process the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences determines which applicants will be offered a position.
