Helsingør

A two-year postdoctoral fellowship on marine bacterioplankton is available from April 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter in the Marine Biological Section within the Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen.

The fellowship is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark for the project “Pathogenic Vibrio bacteria in the current and future Baltic Sea waters: mitigating the problem (BaltVib)” under the EU Horizon 2020 program “Biodiversa”. The postdoc project will be based in the research group of Prof. Lasse Riemann in the Marine Biological Section, located in Helsingør, 40 km north of Copenhagen. (https://www1.bio.ku.dk/english/research/mbs/marine-molecular-microbiology/). Riemann is co-PI in the BaltVib project.

The successful applicant will have experience and interest in marine microbial ecology. Insight into molecular analyses of marine microbial communities and bioinformatics is an asset.

Project Overview
Vibrio – microbes that are part of the natural bacterioplankton in temperate marine waters – have in recent years flourished in the Baltic Sea, probably stimulated by elevated surface water temperatures. Several Vibrio species are human pathogens. It is hence of great concern that Vibrio-related wound infections and fatalities have increased dramatically along the Baltic coasts. Future climate change is predicted to escalate this problem, posing a significant threat to human health and the Baltic tourism industry. However, the projections do not yet take into account the influence of ‘ecosystem engineers’ such as mussels and macrophytes, especially eel grass, on Vibrio diversity and abundance. Recent data indicate that in some of the ‘ecosystem engineers’ habitats the abundance of pathogenic Vibrio spp. is reduced. This opens up the option for nature-based solution (NbS) strategies to control pathogenic vibrios in the nearshore habitat where humans interact with the sea. BaltVib aims to delineate the current and future Vibrio status, determine biotic and abiotic key factors regulating Vibrio prevalence, and identify NbSs to mitigate the problem.

The three-year BaltVib project involves 7 international partners. The work of the Danish postdoc position will focus on bacterial community composition analyses, involving 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR targeting Vibrio pathogenicity genes. The work will include field and laboratory work, and extensive international collaboration. Except for some obligations within the project, significant freedom in shaping the postdoc project is available, including other approaches aiming to decipher aspects of bacterial composition and functionality.

Qualifications
a) PhD in biology.
b) Documented experience with marine microbial ecology and bacterial community analysis.
c) Scientific publications.
d) Creativity and ability to be both team-oriented and independent.
e) Embrace an international research environment and interdisciplinary research.
f) A proven record of excellent English speaking, reading and writing skills.

In addition to the fulfilment of the above-mentioned qualifications, the main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant, the match with the project, and good interpersonal skills.

Procedures and shortlisting
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether an expert committee will assess their application. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself. The Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee, will make the final selection of the successful candidate.
