Postdoc position in meiofauna genomics: Unravelling the genome of one of the smallest and rarest animal phyla - Micrognathozoa
Postdoc of meiofauna genomics
Department of Biology
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
The postdoc position will be part of a larger project studying the genomics of unexplored meiofauna lineages, seeking to enhance our understanding of their evolution. If successful, you will help establish a pioneering and valuable pipeline for acquiring high quality genomes from single minute organisms with limited amount of high molecular weight input DNA, opening many new research avenues.
One of the animals in focus is the 0.1 mm long, microscopic “jaw animal” that has such a unique anatomy that it is acknowledged as the most recently described, 30th animal phylum on earth, Micrognathozoa. With precious and carefully preserved specimens from the three known localities in Greenland, Subantarctica and the Pyrenees we will attempt to provide a reference genome of one of the smallest and rarest phyla on earth. We will use this valuable genomic resource as a catalyzer for genome resequencing and comparisons between and within populations, to address the standing enigmas of how this phylum reproduce (no males known) and dispersed across the planet.
The post doc will join an international team of researchers and an inclusive and stimulating environment for a driven, enthusiastic and motivated researcher. The research project will involve field collecting of meiofauna, conferences, optimization of lab protocols and bioinformatics. We can envisage strong candidates (fluent in written and spoken English) coming through a variety of routes such as evolutionary biology, computational biology, phylogenomics or bioinformatics. However, the most important qualification is that the project appeals to you.
Further information on the Department is linked at http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. Information about the Worsaae lab can be found at https://www1.bio.ku.dk/english/research/mbs/worsaae-lab/
For informal requests, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].
The position is open from 1 April 2023or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 2 years with extension being negotiable.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
