PhD Scholarship at the Department of Orthopedic, University Hospital of Hvidovre and University of Copenhagen (UCPH)

The department of Orthopedics, University Hospital of Hvidovre, Denmark, invites applications for a PhD position in Orthopedics and Biomechanical testing to be filled by November 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is funded for 3 years.

Information about the department can be found at

https://intranet.regionh.dk/ahh/afdelinger/ortopaedkirurgisk-afdeling/Sider/default.aspx

and

https://intranet.regionh.dk/ahh/afdelinger/ortopaedkirurgisk-afdeling/om-afdelingen/Sider/Afdelingens-forskning.aspx

The PhD position is part of a 4-year project that is partially financed by the Horizon 2020 Framework Program - Project: 952150 — BoneFix and lead by consultant, associate professor Christian Wong, Professor Stine Jacobsen, and professor Michael Mørk Petersen.

The larger project entitledBoneFix: A Paradigm Shift in Fracture Fixations via On-Site Fabrication of Bone Restoration Patches investigates a novel class of bone adhesives that will allow for personalized surgical treatment of bone fractures via minimally invasive surgery under local anesthesia. This will be accomplished by developing a novel library of biocompatible, biodegradable triazine monomers, linear polycarbonates and multi-purpose dendritic materials, capable of binding to the wet bone, together with strong biodegradable organic/ceramic composites. Building from the bottom up, the concept involves three domains: a bone substitute void filler, a topological mechanical fixation patch, and a protective anti-bacterial hydrogel layer. The components will be delivered through narrow gauge needles and solidify “on fracture site” via High Energy Visible Light Off-Stoichiometric Thiol-Ene Coupling chemistry (HEV-OSTEC). Collectively, these will form a Bone Restoration Patch (BRP) - a customizable, universal solution for fractures that upon complete healing will be fully resorbed. The BRPs will be thoroughly evaluated by stakeholders to assess relevant properties, both ex-vivo and finally in-vivo on relevant animal models. The ultimate goal is to cement a new disruptive technology and a paradigm shift in clinical interventions of bone fractures in which BoneFix heals fixates and protects complex fractures making screws, plates and open surgery obsolete.

Specifically, the PhD study will entail a reproducibility study to investigate that the fixation strength of BoneFix is consistent. This will firstly be performed by a simple test of the fixation strength of BoneFix with a simple cantilever bending experiment. This will be executed in Copenhagen, Denmark. Then additional mechanical testing will be performed on a human cadaver (secondly) and animal cadaver (thirdly) bone. This will be executed in collaboration with the AO Research Institute Davos (ARI), Schweiz and University of Copenhagen Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Taastrup, Denmark.

Deadline for applications: 14.th of October, 2021 at 23.59 (CEST)

Job description

The specific focus of the PhD project is to investigate the application of the novel bone fixation patch in an experimental and clinical setting. To obtain evidence of the consistency of the fixation strength of Bonefix, the PhD student will measure mechanical strength in various bone types and mechanical testing environments. This will be executed regionally in Copenhagen and internationally in Davos, Switzerland. The PhD student will engage in mechanical testing as well as dealing with formal project responsibilities and formal reporting to the EC in relation to the project.

The successful candidate will be working in close cooperation with the project employees and supervisors as well as the other national and especially international researchers who are expected to partake in the activities of the departmental research activities daily both in Denmark and abroad.

Enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences' PhD School is a precondition for employment as a PhD scholar.

As a PhD scholar at The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, you will be supervised throughout the 6 semesters of your program. In addition to this, you must complete courses totaling approximately 30 ECTS. On completion of the PhD program, you must submit a PhD thesis in order to document your research effort.
