The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor in Environmental DNA at the Globe Institute (https://globe.ku.dk) starting on 1 July 2020 or as soon as possible.
Job description
The Globe Institute is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The Institute’s main purpose is to address basic scientific questions through interdisciplinary approaches. The institute operates at the intersection of natural, and medical sciences and the humanities.
As part of the Globe’s remit and to strengthen its existing research, teaching and external communication, we seek to appoint an Associate Professor in Environmental DNA, to both carry out research and teaching, as well as heading the development and implementation of the Globe Institute’s communication strategy on the institute-side through close work with the Faculty’s communications department.
The Associate Professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:
Required qualifications
The successful applicant will have a PhD in Molecular Ecology or a related discipline, and an excellent track record of original research at international level.
In addition, the successful applicant should be able to document:
• research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an Assistant Professor, but may also be obtained in other ways
• an outstanding publication record in environmental DNA, including both method development and applications to research questions
• a proven track record working with technical developments in the field of environmental DNA and DNA reference databases
• experience in leading environmental DNA field expeditions
• pedagogical competencies and a proven track record of research-based teaching, including teaching at international level
• experience in supervising Bachelor, Master’s and PhD students
• experience in research leadership
• a proven track record in attracting external funding at both national and international level
• excellent team and project management skills, including the management of major national and international collaborative research projects
• an excellent track record in communicating his/her research results to the wider public, including writing of popular science articles, giving public presentations and participating in TV, radio and newspaper interviews.
• a proven theoretical and practical track record in outreach, science communication and science journalism, including university internal and external communications and press work. Further, development of outreach programs and museum exhibitions.
• excellent interpersonal and communicative skills
Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

- research, including publication/academic dissemination with a focus on both the development of environmental DNA methodologies, their application to questions of basic and applied interest, and the development of international collaborative research projects
- leading the national DNA reference database, DNAmark
- research-based teaching, including the development of environmental DNA courses and associated examination within his/her general area of competence
- research leadership, including supervision of Masters and PhD students
- attraction and management of externally funded research projects
- heading the development and implementation of the Globe Institute’s communications strategy and acting as a link between the researchers and the communications staff
- public dissemination of research outcomes, including engaging and interacting in the Danish citizen science environment
- academic assessments.
