København K
The research project “Castles: Tracing the Origins and Consequences of the Modern State” directed by Professor (mso) Jacob Gerner Hariri is hiring one Post Doc. The Castle project is financed by the Danish Research Councils under its flagship Sapere Aude-Program. The position is open from 1 October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The employment is temporary for two years, with the possibility of extension for a further year.
Qualifications
The position is aimed at applicants who have obtained their PhD. in political science or a related relevant discipline (e.g., economics). While a background in political science is not a requirement, a keen interest in state building and political development over the long run is expected.
The applicant should have proven research experience and academic publications in the area of comparative politics, political economy, and advanced quantitative methods. Considerable weight will be accorded to the ability to conduct independent research, scientific excellence, critical and creative thinking and ability to carry out research in a structured manner.
Experience from teaching and participation in the international research community, such as organizing workshops, seminars and academic conferences is seen as a merit. The candidate should have good collaborative skills and value academic teamwork. Desirable qualifications include familiarity with social data science and a knowledge of/interest in political history.
Job description
The project explores the monopolization of violence in European history, thereby tracing the origins of the modern state where and when it actually originated. Castles and fortifications represent contemporary coercive potential, and the project uses, among other things, official data from national registers of cultural heritage on castle construction and ownership to map the process of state formation. The project explores the concept of the state as well as theories about the causes and consequences of state formation.
The successful candidate will enrol as part of a research team consisting of a Professor (mso), a PhD-student, and a number of research assistants. The postdoc will also be part of a larger research environment at the Department of Political Science and is expected to contribute to the social and intellectual life of the Department
A postdoctoral position is a fixed-term academic position. The position is heavily weighted in favor of research within the project.
Salary and conditions of employment
Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The annual salary for postdoctoral researchers is within the range DKK 412,378 – 434,179. In addition to the salary paid directly to you, the University will also pay a monthly contribution to your pension fund corresponding to 17.1 % of your salary. Negotiation for additional supplements will be possible. A special tax scheme is offered for researchers recruited abroad, see https://ism.ku.dk/salary-tax-pension/tax/
Application
The application must be uploaded electronically using the link below.
The application must be in English and include a CV, a short motivation letter (maximum 2 pages), a list of publications, a maximum number of three scientific works, of which only one may be a monograph or compilation thesis and a copy of the doctoral certificate.
