The Department of geosciences and natural resource management offers a two-year Postdoctoral position in the field of Remote Sensing of vegetation Department of geosciences and natural resource management offers a two-year, with a specific focus on tree cover in drylands using very high resolution satellite imagery and machine learning.
Project description:
Drylands cover large parts of the terrestrial land surface but their tree cover and carbon stocks are largely unknown. Large proportion of dryland trees grow isolated without canopy closure and most scientific interest is devoted to forests, while the density and size of trees outside of forests is not well documented. However, non-forest trees play a crucial role for biodiversity and provide ecosystem services such as carbon storage, food resources, livelihoods and shelter for humans and animals and the economic and ecological importance of non-forest trees is largely unknown at large scale.
The project works towards a wall-to-wall identification of trees in global drylands, and development of methods to study their carbon stocks and socio-environmental determinants. Trees are not only assessed as canopy fraction of an area, but as individuals, allowing to identify not only their coverage but also their density, crown size, and key ecological services. Very high resolution satellite data will be applied in conjunction with fully convolutional neural networks and field surveys. Complementary, passive microwave data will be used to develop dynamic canopy cover and carbon density products.
The aim of the Postdoctoral position is to develop a framework on the assessment of individual trees across African drylands based on PlanetScope data.
The applicant must be prepared for undertaking fieldwork in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The position will be an integral part of a 4 year research project financed by DFF: “Mapping, characterizing and analyzing individual trees and shrubs outside forests in African drylands”, and integrated in the 5 year research project entitled: “DeReEco: Deep Learning and Remote Sensing for Unlocking Global Ecosystem Resource Dynamics” financed by the Velux Foundations.
