Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation invites applicants for a 3 year part-time employment as teaching assistant professor/teaching associate professor with concurrent employment for the master program Architecture and Extreme Environments.

We are looking for a visionary and professionally strong profile that is passionate about disseminating knowledge, and which will help to develop and strengthen the subject area. With a focus on theory, method and practice, you are expected to be able to add current relevance to the teaching.

The vacant position is affiliated at the Institute of Architecture and Technology (IBT) and should be filled by 1st of August 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Institute of Architecture and Technology (IBT)

The Department of Architecture and Technology unites architecture with studies of physical and digital technologies in the development and use of materials, the design and properties of the building structures and the conditions of the building. The institute focuses on how technologies in critical interaction with architecture can enrich the community and cope with global challenges - both in Danish and international contexts. We work on materials studies, building physics and tectonic innovation. The department's research and artistic development often takes place in close interdisciplinary cooperation with relevant institutions and companies all over the world.

The department's teaching is organized in 1 bachelor's program and 3 master's programs that form the framework for a number of academic development environments in architecture and technology. In addition, the institute contributes to the Royal Danish Academy's interdisciplinary teaching.

About the position

The position as teaching assistant professor/teaching associate professor will consist of teaching and assignments in relation to this in collaboration with the department's other teaching staff. Performing other tasks may occur to a limited extent.

Your tasks will include:

  • dissemination of knowledge and experience from the subject's practice through lectures, teaching and guidance
  • teaching planning and associated administration in connection with the Royal Danish Academy's programs and interdisciplinary teaching, including contributions to the development of semester plans and curricula
  • participation in professional assessments, critiques and evaluations
  • participation in fieldwork with students abroad
  • teaching experimental design methods.

As a teaching associate professor, you will also have to contribute to the development of teaching methods and the planning of the academic evaluations and assessments.

Qualifications requirements

You have a relevant education at Master’s degree level as a minimum.

You also have relevant employment in the field of architecture and up-to-date experience with relevant architectural practice.

In addition, we expect you to:

  • have at least 3 years of professional architectural experience and documentation for creative / producing and current architectural company
  • have teaching experience from a higher education institution, preferably in the field of architecture and preferably at master's level
  • be up to date with architectural practice and the ability to transform this into teaching.

In order to be employed as a teaching associate professor at the time of employment, you must also:

  • have at least 6 years of professional architectural experience, including significant participation in qualitative creative / producing architectural business at a high international level
  • have at least 2 years of teaching experience
  • document to have received supervision, undertaken pedagogical skills development, and received a positive written assessment of your teaching qualifications. The Academy also requires candidates to have completed and passed a teacher training course, and to provide documentation for this. In exceptional cases, exemptions can be granted from the teacher training course requirement, if the candidate can document having completed and passed another pedagogical education from a recognized educational institution, e.g. as a teacher or MA in Education.
  • document relevant knowledge production within practice and artistic development.

In the overall assessment for the appointment to this position, particular importance will be attached to qualified efforts and new developments within the teaching area. Importance will also be attached to that you:

  • can teach in English
  • has experience with fieldwork as a basic pedagogical method
  • has knowledge of scientific processes, measurement programs and instruments
  • has experience with 1:1 digital productions.

Salary and employment conditions

Employment and salary will be in accordance with the agreement in force between the Ministry of Finance and a number of organizations under the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academics in public service. It will be possible to negotiate qualification supplements depending on your competences and experience.

Employment will also be in accordance with the applicable job structure for artistic and scientific staff at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation, Aarhus School of Architecture and Design School Kolding – Executive Order no. 962 of 24 August 2015.

You will be employed as a teaching assistant professor og a teaching associate professor depending on your qualifications. The placement takes place after specific assessment by an assessment committee. If the employment takes place as a teaching assistant professor, a teaching assistant professor period will be determined for upgrading to teaching associate professor level.

The position is a part-time position with an average of 7.4 work hours per week. In addition, concurrent employment is required throughout the employment period.

The position is a fixed-term position and the position will terminate without further notice after 3 years.

Please note that the position is being advertised and will be filled in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science's 'Executive Order of 12 April 2019 on the employment of artistic and scientific staff at the higher artistic educational institutions within the Ministry of Higher Education and Science's area'.

After the application deadline, the Head of Institute selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the selection committee. The selection is based on an overall assessment of which applicants best meet the criteria in the job advertisement based on the submitted application material. All applicants will then be notified whether their application has been selected for assessment, and the selected applicants will be informed of the members of the assessment committee. The assessment committee will assess the selected applicants in relation to the specific position. When the committee has completed its assessment, each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the assessment.
