The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) invites applicants for a 4-year researcher position in Core Analysis Laboratory of GEUS' Department of Reservoir Geology.

Job description

Core Analysis Laboratory is a petrophysical laboratory specialized in core analysis, with emphasis on complex experiments on core samples at reservoir conditions. The researcher will participate in the work at GEUS' Core Analysis Laboratory to reach the ambitious goal of reducing CO2 emissions in Denmark by 70% in 2030. GEUS' Core Analysis Laboratory has been a recognized partner of consultancy and research for many years. In particular, the laboratory has been successful in designing and conducting complex experiments, which lead to valuable information about injectivity, productivity and geochemical interactions of reservoir rocks.

GEUS' Core Analysis Laboratory has been engaged in many national and international projects for investigating enhanced oil recovery by injection of natural gas or CO2 and recently the laboratory has entered several groups to participate in planning CO2 sequestration. To be able to continue this role in the green energy transition, a talented researcher is needed in the laboratory.

Reduced injectivity during CO2 sequestration is a major concern for CO2 sequestration operations. As the compatibility to CO2 is reservoir specific, there is a need to conduct the related research for each reservoir individually. GEUS' Core Analysis Laboratory will be engaged in determining the injectivity to CO2, the residual trapping of CO2, the induced geochemical reactions, and possible salt precipitation as CO2 reaches the reservoir fluids and rocks. Geothermal energy production and subsurface heat storage encounter similar injectivity problems. Relevant experiments on core samples at reservoir conditions may help to understand and solve these problems.

The researcher will be responsible for design, planning, and execution of complex core experiments at reservoir conditions. The researcher will be working with projects related to GEUS' Core Analysis Laboratory.

Your qualifications

The applicant needs to have knowledge and experience of the experimental procedures related to both conventional core analysis (CCAL) and special core analysis (SCAL). Understanding the physical processes and the chemical reactions during such experiments and relate them to industry needs is also important. The position requires the researcher to be able to communicate the experimental results across the network to partners and other stakeholders. The applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, reservoir engineering or similar fields as well as a few years of experience as research assistant or postdoc. Writing reports, papers and articles from the outcome of projects by analyzing and interpreting the data and presenting the new discoveries at conferences are among the expectations.

The applicant should also have:

  • Thorough hands-on skills in core analysis experiments both conventional and advanced.
  • Experience in CO2 sequestration compatibility/injectivity tests for high permeability sandstone reservoirs.
  • Experience of handling and understanding tight carbonate rocks at reservoir conditions.
  • Experience of chemical fluid characterization during reservoir condition flow and batch experiments.
  • Publications in ISI peer reviewed journals.
  • Strong interest in applied research.
  • The ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and within big projects nationally and internationally, while based in Denmark.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English.

Department of Reservoir Geology

Department of Reservoir Geology undertakes research and research-based consultancy within oil and gas exploration and production as well as underground energy and CO2 storage. Principal activities are within field structure delineation, petrophysical properties of reservoir and seal rocks, and resource assessment. The department numbers approximately 30 employees including researchers, consultants and technicians.

We offer

  • A creative and interdisciplinary research environment
  • A lively and informal working environment with talented and dedicated colleagues
  • Versatile work duties and good opportunities to influence them
  • Development opportunities with access to courses and other further education
  • Family friendly workplace with flextime
