Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Managementinvites applications for an assistant professorship in Geography on Migration and Rural-Urban Linkages. The assistant professorship is a fixed-term position (3 years) from 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The assistant professorship is situated at the Section of Geography – Land, Environment and Society, and associated with the research group, Environment and Society in the Global South (https://ign.ku.dk/english/research/geography/environment-society-developing-countries/). Our ideal applicant is someone with a solid background in research and a keen interest in educating others on topics related to migration, mobility, urban development, and rural-urban dynamics, especially within the context of the Global South. The position deals in particular with how field-based research can push for a better understanding of livelihood fluxes, considering the increasing pressures from economic globalization and environmental challenges. Applicants are expected to take part in interdisciplinary research, including ongoing research projects in the research group Environment and Society in the Global South. It is also expected that applicants contribute to the development of new research ideas, applications, and teaching within the field.

The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication, and knowledge sharing with the rest of society, as well as research-based teaching. The assistant professor must be able to contribute to the department’s scholarly activities, including examinations, and to perform administrative tasks. The successful candidate must complete a mandatory teacher-training course designed especially for assistant professors. Since the work will be divided equally between teaching and research (including administration and communication), applicants must document competencies in these areas. Applicants are encouraged to find out more about the department’s research, educations and variety of different subjects at the department’s website: https://ign.ku.dk/english/.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
