Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen
We are offering one or more PhD fellowships in glycobiology. The successful candidate(s) will be employed at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
ABOUT CCG
Copenhagen Center for Glycomics (CCG) is a Danish National Research Center devoted to the study of diseases caused by defects in the biosynthesis and structure of complex carbohydrates. Currently, CCG comprises 5 research groups and hosts about 10 post docs and 15 PhD students in addition to Master students and guest researchers. CCG strives be a leader in glycosciences in pioneering transformation of the field towards wider integration into main stream cell biology by developing experimental strategies, informatics approaches, and sustainable resources amenable not only to experts. We aim to facilitate discovery of diseases caused by altered glycosylation, develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and identify new ways to design and produce improved glycoprotein drugs. CCG is a cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and training Center located on the 10th floor of the new Mærsk Tower science building within the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM) www.icmm.ku.dk. CCG has state-of-the-art facilities for mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, cell engineering, and glycan arrays, and the senior leaders hold diverse expertise in all areas of glycosciences. Our core valuables include glycoproteome data and bioinformatics tools, validated gene editing tools, glycoengineered cell libraries, and design matrices for recombinant production of glycotherapeutics. More information can be found at www.glycomics.ku.dk
Project description
The positions are potentially related to two different projects: 1) One specific project is on how glycans affect the function of the human tissue formation. We will use genetic engineering and mass spectrometry technologies combined with human skin organotypic tissue models to understand the importance of glycans in keratinocyte differentiation and human skin formation. The program has a high potential for fundamental discoveries and pharmacological intervention in neural diseases. 2) The second project is related to how glycans affect the function of the human neurological system. Again, with genetic engineering and mass spectrometry combined with neural cell and tissue models, we aim to perform a systematic dissection of glycans in neuronal differentiation, synapse formation, and the interplay between neurons and glial cells. We believe the program has the potential to impact pharmacological intervention in neural diseases. Please indicate your preferred program.
