København N

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoctoral scientist with extensive experience in molecular virology to work on aspects of coronavirus biology to commence on 1st September 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is initially offered for a 2-year period but it is hoped to extend this, subject to funding.

Background

The Section for Veterinary Clinical Microbiology is within the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH). It has a focus on animal pathogens. The Section carries out research and teaching in the area of serious infectious livestock diseases, including exotic, emerging and zoonotic viral diseases with the focus on key aspects of diagnosis, surveillance and control of these diseases. The research is basic and applied. The Department is part of the Danish Veterinary Consortium (DK-VET) between the UCPH and the Statens Serum Institut (SSI) for the performance of the veterinary public service agreement with the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food (FVST) that is aimed at providing scientific advice to FVST regarding surveillance, prevention and control of serious animal diseases.

Our group and research
We work on a variety of aspects of the biology of important animal viruses. These studies range from detailed molecular characterization of virus functions to more epidemiological studies on virus distribution. The group includes postdocs, PhD students and a technician and studies can involve collaborations both within the Department and with the Statens Serum Institut.

Coronaviruses can cause pandemics such as those resulting from the spread of SARS-CoV-2, however, more often, less serious infections occur. As well as circulating in humans, coronaviruses also circulate in other mammals, as well as in birds. There is a need to understand in greater depth the biology of these viruses. The viruses have large (ca. 30kb) positive-sense RNA genomes and use a variety of strategies to express a wide variety of structural and non-structural proteins. Aspects of interest include:

  • Applying molecular methods to investigate key features of coronavirus gene expression and replication that may lead to novel approaches for development of antiviral agents
  • Studying the relationships between coronaviruses from different animal species and potential shifts in host range
