Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

The Kveiborg group at BRIC has an open postdoc position for a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to study cellular crosstalk in the tumour microenvironment (TME). We are recruiting for a 3-year position and are looking for candidates, who will be able to join our team in the Autumn 2021. The recruited postdoc will work closely with other members of our international research team to address the role of ER stress and ADAM proteases in shaping the pro-tumorigenic tumour microenvironment. The project involves state-of-the-art methodologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, RNA sequencing, quantitative proteomics, advanced microscopy and syngeneic mouse tumour models.

Our research
The overall scientific goal in our group is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression. To this end, we study ADAMs - a family of proteolytic enzymes with important pro-tumorigenic functions (see for example Kruse et al. EMBO J, 2020; Mygind et al. J Cell Sci, 2018; Dombernowsky et al. Nat Commun 2015).

Driven by recent advances in cancer research, we are particularly interested in understanding how ADAMs, through the shedding of multiple growth factors, cytokines and receptor molecules from the cell surface, mediate the crosstalk between cancer cells and non-malignant cells - e.g. fibroblasts, endothelial cells and immune cells in solid tumours and in this way play key roles in the remodelling of the TME.

Your job
We are looking for an ambitious postdoctoral candidate with a strong track record in cellular and molecular biology, ideally with a background in basic cancer research and experience with experimental mouse models. You will take lead on a recently funded project investigating how the functional interplay between ER stress factors and ADAMs shapes the TME. You will collaborate with other members of the Kveiborg team and our collaborators to address these questions, integrate established experimental tools and methodologies, and complement this with your experience and expertise.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You are a highly self-motivated and ambitious scientist
  • You have a PhD in Life Sciences
  • You have an excellent track record with at least 1 peer reviewed first author paper in a good quality scientific journal
  • You have a strong background in cellular and molecular biology, and experience in the area of cancer biology and use of mouse models is seen as strong advantages
  • You have the ability to independently envision, plan and execute a research project
  • You have excellent technical skills
  • You have excellent English skills written and spoken

Place of employment
The place of employment is at BRIC, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and a number of core facilities, including a single cell core, next generation sequencing and CRIPSR platforms, histology and microscopy facilities, which are all shared between the 23 research groups at BRIC and the associated Finsen Laboratory. We have weekly data meetings and journal clubs within the group, weekly internal BRIC seminars and a seminar program with invited international speakers. BRIC has an Association for Students and Postdocs (ASAP), a PhD programme on Molecular Mechanisms of Disease (MoMeD), and a well-established postdoc career programme (http://www.bric.ku.dk/phd-and-postdoc-programme/postdoc-career-programme/). Also, BRIC participates in EU-life – a European alliance of 13 excellent life science research institutions http://eu-life.eu/.

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for 3 years. Starting date is 1 October 2021 or after agreement. Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The employer pays an additional 17.1 % pension.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of 2020.
