Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

We are looking to hire two highly motivated and dynamic researchers with a PhD or equivalent doctorate to join the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Candidates should have a strong background in genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, data science, genomic medicine, machine learning, or a related field and be interested in obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The positions are 3-year positions to start August 1, 2023, or after agreement in the Loos and Merino Groups.

Background
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010, and in 2017, we moved into new laboratories, offices, and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower www.maersktower.ku.dk.

The Center has around 280 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.

The Loos Group studies key genetic and non-genetic determinants of body weight regulation to gain insight into the deeper layers of biology that underlie obesity and metabolism. You can read more about the Loos Group here.

The Merino Group investigates how molecular and environmental factors modulate variable metabolic responses to therapeutic interventions and shape food choice behaviour. You can read more about the Merino Group here.

Job description
The successful candidates will lead research projects aimed at understanding the molecular basis of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk. They will analyse high throughput omics data (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, metagenomics) from large-scale repositories combined with single-cell sequencing and imaging data to 1) gain insight into the deeper layers of biology that underlie body weight regulation and fat distribution, 2) identify molecular signatures that underlie more homogeneous obesity and diabetes subtypes than the current obesity and type 2 diabetes classification, and 3) identify biomarkers or clinical features related to variable disease progression and the propensity to develop obesity and diabetes-related complications.

Skills and qualifications
We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers who, in addition to the desired expertise stated above, have the following skills and qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in the field of genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, data science, genomic medicine, or machine learning
  • A strong computational background and expertise in dealing with large datasets, including human genetics, single-cell RNA-sequence, etc.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatic tools to translate variant-to-function is an asset
  • High level of proficiency in programming
  • An active interest in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolism
  • An interest in conceiving and designing new projects, in line with the group’s research focus
  • A proven track record showing scientific productivity in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience in supervising other researchers at different levels
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken

Place of employment
The place of employment is at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer a creative and stimulating work environment in a dynamic, international research setting.

Terms of employment
The employments as postdoc are full-time and fixed-term positions for 3 years. Starting date is August 1, 2023, or after agreement.

Salary, pension, and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not been tax liable to Denmark in the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” from 2020.
