We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for the Department of Immunology and Microbiology (ISIM) to work at Copenhagen Hepatitis C Program (CO-HEP) to commence January 3, 2024. The position is for 2 years. Information on the Department can be found at: www.isim.ku.dk

Our research
During the Postdoc, you will be working on the molecular and cell biology of hepatitis virus infections. You will join the research program of Professor Jens Bukh, who leads a research team of 50 scientists in Copenhagen Hepatitis C Program (CO-HEP), a center within the Department of Immunology and Microbiology (ISIM), University of Copenhagen and Department of Infectious Diseases, Hvidovre Hospital. Your primary work location will be at the university. Our work environment is defined by collaborative efforts in ambitious research projects, with a dynamic atmosphere and a diverse international staff with an evenly mixed age and gender composition.

Your job
Your project on hepatitis viruses, including hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), and host interactions will be defined together with your supervisor, Jens Bukh, and will involve methodology such as virus cultivation, molecular biology assays, functional characterization, RNA-seq on bulk tissue, single cells and spatial RNA-seq analysis, and importantly design and execution of in vivo experiments. We strive for a high degree of inclusion, and you will be expected to actively participate in method development and development of projects in close collaboration with co-workers. A high level of motivation, ambition and involvement is required.

Professor Jens Bukh has led CO-HEP for 17 years and was awarded advanced grants from The Danish Council for Independent Research and the Novo Nordisk Foundation and received the Novo Nordisk Prize and the Hagedorn Prize.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have a PhD in life or health sciences
  • You are highly experienced in small animal in vivo studies for virus research
  • You have an active interest in virology, antiviral and vaccine studies
  • Experience in HCV and other hepatitis viruses
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience working with human-liver chimeric mouse models
  • Experience in cell-based assays with focus on virus production and neutralization
  • Experience with analysis of RNA viruses, titration by cell-based assays, (qPCR), NGS, state-of-the-art RNA seq methods (bulk, spatial, single-cell RNA sequencing)

Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen at Panum. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and animal facilities.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 2 years. The starting date is January 3, 2024.

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 36,400 DKK/approx. 4,800 EUR (October 2023 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
