The University seeks to appoint an associate professor to the Globe Institute to commence as soon as possible.

Globe Institute is a newly established department at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Globe aims for interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach and therefore has a strong focus on developing transformative science across our planet’s history. This present vacancy, embedded in section for GeoGenetics, aims at strengthening the interdisciplinary research and education between ancient genetics, molecular geobiology, Quaternary geology, physical geography, archaeology, biodiversity and taxonomy.

Job description

Globe Institute seeks an excellent scientist for a Associate Professorship for developing of DNA metabarcoding tools for different practical applications. The use of soil metabarcoding as a forensic tool for matching of samples, and provenance inference of unknown samples are to be developed with stating point in a 200-sample dataset available, including topics as temporal and spatial variability, marker selection, and algorithm selection/development. Optimization of current metabarcoding protocols for practical use in environmental surveillance is another focus. The candidate should have a strong background in eukaryotic organismal knowledge, relevant laboratory techniques, DNA based identification, bioinformatics knowledge, basic ecology, forensics and insight in the development of new bioinformatics analyses. The candidate is also expected to have taxonomic knowledge of fungi at expert level and to contribute to the writing of up-to-date Danish identification keys for the Danish Fungal Atlas project.

Specific qualifications

The successful candidate must have extensive experience in:

  • Conduction of large studies using DNA metabarcoding including laboratory skills
  • Bioinformatic analysis of metabarcoding and ecological data
  • Development and optimization of bioinformatics tools
  • Knowledge of fungi taxonomic
  • Experience with forensic application of scientific tools

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications

The successful applicant must document a track record in research fields relevant for the position and should have a track record in international research collaboration. The candidate must document a strong track record in procuring external national or international research funding. Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. Moreover, applicants are expected to have shown leadership in developing and implementing educational programmes within related fields. The associate professor should be able to document research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways and is required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2013.
